iPhone Owners Report Even Worse Battery Life With iOS 5.0.1 (Post-Jobs Apple Woes)
Fox News ^ | 11 November 2011 | Zach Epstein

Apple on Thursday released an update to iOS 5 that addressed issues many users were having with poor battery performance.

The Cupertino, California-based company had been testing the solution for some time, even uncharacteristically reaching out to affected end-users and having them install the potential fix to test its effectiveness. Despite Apple’s determination that iOS 5.0.1 resolved issues related to battery life, however, not all users are finding that to be the case.

“After upgrading to 5.0.1 my iPhone is draining the battery even faster,” one user posted to Apple’s support forum. A number of other iPhone owners have taken to Apple’s forum to complain that instead of improving their battery life, iOS 5.0.1 has actually exacerbated the issue. Numerous threads can be found on Apple’s website and on other forums around the web, and some users claim to lose as much as 50% of a charge in two hours or less. Apple has not publicly addressed users’ complaints.

Apple released iOS 5 on October 12th and reports of significantly decreased battery life surfaced almost immediately. BGR has independently tested a number of handsets and while battery life does seem less impressive than it was with iOS 4, we have not found performance to be nearly as bad as many reports indicate.

Left some open high-impedance inputs on the PCB? Nah...no one is that stupid.

re:"open high-impedance inputs"

As an EE of 45 years experience I can assure you that would not be a problem. Writing code for nearly as long would lead me to believe that it was a software issue concerning radio usage (both phone and GPS) and the percentage of time that the device was "awake" to the user. This fundamental clock determines the amount of delay you are willing to tolerate between the time you touch the device and the time it wakes up. This is critical in battery usage.

And as an EE myself I can assure you that leaving a high-impedance input floating does cause excessive currents to flow in a device, not that this is the problem here. Look it up. As a matter of fact I was making a little joke based on an experience I had after switching to software development in which I no longer designed my own PCBs.

Apple has never been good with batteries. My IMAC mouse drains really fast.

I updated 3 devices last night to 5.01 and so far, the 4S is draining faster, the ipad 2 is fine and the iphone 4 seems to be fine. The 4S is draining really fast. I charged it to 100% last night, and I’ve not used the phone at all since then and it was down to 83% an hour ago.

I’ve posted on several pages at Apple’s support forums. Still reading them now about this.

But this cracked me up:

“apple please be careful with the people. don’t you promise thinks you can’t deliver, you are aware about http://occupysf.com/

LOL!! Wouldn’t that be funny?
A bunch of leftists burning down a building filled with leftists over a phone that most of them couldn’t afford in the first place.

I would tend to agree. However that would mean that they have either completely ignored this problem from the last release to this one or they can't fix it.

My iPhone 4S battery was draining fast, until I found out that every program I would use was still running in the background.

Now I tab the main button 2 times and all the running programs appear with a red minus mark in the upper left program. I shut down what I am not wanting to use and the battery life is fine. It's just kind of annoying to keep having to remember to do this.

Apple has never been good with batteries. My IMAC mouse drains really fast.

That must be why Apple has the longest running tablets, laptops, MP3 players and other battery powered portable devices on the market...

Do you remember to turn off your mouse when you aren't using it?

I have an HTC Evo and I don’t have any of those problems. I can also change out the battery myself and boot back up in two minutes. I also have an app killer that saves juice. And I only paid $100 for it.

I must be an oddball...my iPhone is getting several extra hours of charge since the update.

I can't say one way or the other... I updated my iPhone 4 yesterday afternoon and last night I walked into Best Buy to find they had received 20 iPhone 4S just 20 minutes before... so I upgraded. They bought my 18 month old iPhone 4 for $180, and my total out of pocket cost to upgrade was $70.01. . . plus a new two year contract. So I had iOS 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4 for about six hours before it was gone, out of my hands. The new iPhone 4S has not needed a charge... but I don't have a baseline experience to judge it by.

Nope... I was noticing it. One thing I DID notice after updating to the iOS 5 was was that my iPhone 4 started playing the iPod music, streaming it over Bluetooth to the Microsoft Sync when I got into my 2009 Ford Taurus, even though the Sync system was not turned to play music from the iPhone or even turned on... every time... and it would leave the iPod playing and turned on after I left the car. I had to manually turn it off. Since that was connecting via Bluetooth radio, the BT transmitter was left on, consuming power. It did not do that before the update to iOS 5. It still seems to be doing that after the update to iOS 5.0.1 and with the new iPhone 4s...

Hmmmm. Weird.
My problems all started after the iOS 5.0.0 upgrade in my 3GS while I was waiting for my 4S to be delivered.
This is leading me to believe that it’s a problem with the upgrade, not the 4S.
After the 5.0.1 update, the problem isn’t so bad. However, I haven’t put the 4S through the tests yet.
