It is the debate that has been raging between generations of science fiction fans.
But Star Trek star William Shatner believed he had delivered the coup de grace two months ago when he delivered a stinging critique he thought proved his franchise was superior.
But there is a new hope for Star Wars fans, as original cast member Carrie Fisher has struck back with a rebuke that could return the Jedi-filled universe back to prominence.
In a somewhat rambling YouTube video, the Princess Leia star let rip on the rival sci fi favourite.
She said: 'They are not in the same league. i mean they have the word star in the title, and there is space travel.
'Where do they go to, Klingon? It just sounds like a laundry detergent.'
The successful actress and author had a list of grievances with the television and movie franchise that she said made it inferior, including lacklustre visuals, make-up, toys and video games.
She said: 'Show me a special effect, maybe they are just effects, they are not called special effects.

“Lost in Space” was better than either of them.
Nothing approaches the profound Sci-Fi allegory of Dr. Smith as a celery on the vegetable planet.
Danger! Danger!
Agreed! It was far more entertaining and imaginative than either ST or SW. Sci-Fi (deliberately!) used as a platform for comedy.
There has been nothing like it, before or since. The first six seasons were all classics.
I quickly got that impression. That's why I only watched a few episodes.
Ugh, Star Trek:TNG was so appallingly horrid. It was nothing more than every PC liberal's pipe dream thinly disguised as science fiction. The stupid idea that if people will just talk, they can resolve any difference; that a non-capitalist society can actually exist; that euthanasia of people who reach a certain age is desirable, etc. I never saw more than a few episodes of that one.
OTOH, nothing beats the original Star Trek. Spock was so intelligent and logical--when I was 6, I wanted to grow up to be just like him!
This is in the article:
“Carrie, 55, also poked fun at Star Trek’s infamous rival camps of fans, the Trekkies and the Trekkers.
She pointed out that unpopular former US vice president Dick Cheney, and said that the show’s outfits are something that would be seen at a Sarah Palin rally.”
I have no idea what she said about Cheney, since the reporter forgot to mention it...but I expect all Palin fans to now go pit bull on Star Wars.
"WE THE PEOPLE!"
"These words were not for kings. They must apply to ALL the people, or they mean NOTHING! Do you understand?"
Anyone who can watch that scene and not get the chills just doesn't get it.
That made me look, and I wish to hell I hadn't...she's only 55???
Star trek took a lot of chances in it’s day including the first interracial kiss on tv. People forget it was made in the late 60s and those seemingly cheap special effects were state of the art at the time. Cgi didn’t come along until star wars 10 years later
And E. E. "Doc" Smith's Lensman series (from the '30s) made both Star Trek and Star Wars possible. George Lucas has admitted that the Lensman series was an inspiration for Star Wars, and I'll bet Roddenberry knew of Smith's works.
When I read the Lensman books in the early '70s, I thought it would be great to make them into movies, then Star Wars came out, and I realized I wasn't the only one who felt that way....
...as we will all discover starting this coming Thursday...
I heard she wasn't a fan of the movies and didn't know anything about them. Totally robotic performances with tripe dialogue.
I wonder if folks knew that the hysterical "I love you / I know" exchange between Leia and Han was the result of Harrison Ford ad-libbing. Harrison was supposed to say "I love you" back, but he just knew his character, Han, would not say something like that so easily and tossed the "I know" out during taping instead. The set exploded with laughter, so they kept it in.
If the actors don't know the characters or aren't invested in them, they won't fight to grow them or keep them in character.
That's one of the reasons I ultimately prefer Star Trek. They had very little in the way of special effects to hang their performances on - and had to rely on dialogue and character to advance the story line.
Just watched the video
Question: How much did Carrie Fisher drink before??
And she’s only 55!! WTH, she looks like she’s about 70!!
And what is it with formally attractive women from Hollywood and really bad plastic surgery. Why dod they think that skin pulled to tight it can’t move makes you more “attractive”?? Makes you look alien scary if you ask me.
Shatner’s video much better.
Exactly! It’s even more apparent in the novelization which came out at the time. I don’t own it but have read that there are a few more on-target references.
Flash Gordon made it all possible starting in the 1930s.
Tempest in a teapot...uh, er...vacuum.
The only way for Star Wars to redeem itself would be for a new movie with two hours of the Death Star blowing up planets, and for a giant tree shredder to be fed the Ewok race, one Ewok at a time. And put Jar-Jar in the Aliens 3 YYX prison. Hey, I like comedy....
