It is the debate that has been raging between generations of science fiction fans.
But Star Trek star William Shatner believed he had delivered the coup de grace two months ago when he delivered a stinging critique he thought proved his franchise was superior.
But there is a new hope for Star Wars fans, as original cast member Carrie Fisher has struck back with a rebuke that could return the Jedi-filled universe back to prominence.
In a somewhat rambling YouTube video, the Princess Leia star let rip on the rival sci fi favourite.
She said: 'They are not in the same league. i mean they have the word star in the title, and there is space travel.
'Where do they go to, Klingon? It just sounds like a laundry detergent.'
The successful actress and author had a list of grievances with the television and movie franchise that she said made it inferior, including lacklustre visuals, make-up, toys and video games.
She said: 'Show me a special effect, maybe they are just effects, they are not called special effects.

Until producer Fred Freiberger from ST Season 3 came to Space:1999 Season 2 and tried to turn Koenig into Kirk.

There are lots of fan favorites.
I would say its the remake of Battlestar Galactica.
Then Fringe and the X-Files.
Great shows.

Back in the day, the first couple Star Wars were the only movies I ever stood in line for. After those and especially with the recent chapters, blah, can’t be bothered to watch them on tv.
With Star Trek, much like The Three Stooges, must require a certain mind set to appreciate. One is too ridiculous to watch, the other is too moronic to watch.

Season 1 was good, but Season 2 was too soft and attempted to be character-oriented. I don’t see the Freiberger-Koenig as being anything like Kirk, though, nor was there an attempt. Koenig was devoted to one girlfriend in the series, bed-hopping, didn’t engage in the weekly histriionics, and just seemed more adult. The US funders of the show wanted him, and he ruined the show. I have no idea how Fred “Show-Killer” Freiberger had a career in a genre he had no feeling for.

I think the Original 70’s “UFO” may have been the greatest sci-fi of the modern era, especially given the tech at the time, and the futuristic mind of Garry Anderson to pull it off.

The best Star Trek Episodes were the Mirror Universe ones.

Heh. You're right. Since Carrie Fisher is from the franchise that brought you "wookies" and "Mace Windu", I wouldn't start bashing Star Trek over silly names. Actually, being a Trek fan, they've never gone to the planet 'Klingon' at all. There is no such planet in Star Trek. The Klingon homeworld is called Qo'noS. Nice try, Carrie.
Check out Anna Torv's Olivia Dunham on Fringe Season 3. Really remarkable acting. Played three characters!

Roddenberry’s left-wing outlook showed in many episodes.
I saw Forbidden Planet again recently, and it is just a wonderful movie—I use that description intentionally. The music (which was made by creating circuits and recording what happened when electricity was sent through them—what you hear is the sound of the circuits “dying” as they burn out), art direction, script, effects—everything is meant to create that ‘sense of wonder’ that attracts some of us to SF as kids.
Few SF movies really tap into this and it’s a shame. So many SF movies are just action movies in space, when they could be so much more.

It was only able to do that because so much had been invested in "Star Trek Phase II" starting in June, 1977. Paramount was looking at launching a TV network even back then (remember UPN in the '90s?) 13 Scripts were written, a slightly redesigned Enterprise was built and all the cast minus Nimoy signed on. To replace Spock, a new Vulcan named Xon was to be introduced:
