Netgear Wireless Router Problem
Self | November 24, 2011 | PJ-Comix

I seem to be having a problem with my Netgear Router. It is over 3 years old and was given to me by a friend. Anyway, not problems with it UNTIL today. My wife's computer in the other room won't receive the signal. I switched computers and mine won't receive the signal either so the problem isn't her computer. Also her computer was picking up signals from other wireless sources in the neighborhood.

While my computer is attached by wire to the router it works fine even when I switch to wireless. But when not attached directly it doesn't pick up the signal.

Is there a way to fix this or am I due for another router. I prefer to fix it if possible. I notice in the illustration below that power light is on on the left, the #3, 5, & 6 lights are also on on my router. I definitely see what should be a checkmark light that isn't on. Am I missing a light? If so, how to fix?

No reset button but I am going to run the Netgear disk and see what happens.

Sometimes, when you reset the router, the passwords get reset also. This could explain the symptoms.

There is a small reset button slightly inboard of the antenna.

Have you checked the Netgear support website for a copy of the manual?

Is the wireless feature turned on or off? My Netgear allows you to turn the wireless antenna off which turns it into a wired only router.

Unplug, plug in again, it will work fine. It happens to mine too.

This , I think the routers get confused( LOL ) ,so unplug and plug in again is best fix ,goes for all brands

If your wife can see the SSID (sometimes called a network ID) of your wireless router, but not connect to it by wireless, it is usually a password issue. If the SSID is not visible, then there is probably no signal coming from the router.

Did you try the paper clip to the back reset hole? I have the same thing and that works for me.

Follow the link below for a copy of your manual and start with chapter 3 to reconfigure your settings. Be careful as you go through this process that you don’t lose your wired capability.

That's the problem. Other networks in the neighborhood are detected on her computer but not my Netgear. I can also connect via wire to Netgear but no signal seems to be coming from the antenna. Is there some way to turn on the wireless antenna?

I plug my router and cable modem into a separate switched powerstrip - which is plugged into a UPS. That way I can shut them off easily (reboot) without affecting the other equipment connected to the UPS. Switch off, count thirty seconds, then switch back on.

There’s no simple way to just turn on the wireless antenna?

They all go out over time. Just like an GFCI or a Photo Cell.

3 years is a pretty short life, but new routers have more up to date features, encryption, and firmware for $150 or less.

You can try updating the firmware, but they are pretty much a throw away item.

Netgears are good but dicey. Sometimes they work like a champ, others, not so much. I do my telephony through the router using UMA and sometimes it will crap my call out.

Bottom line is that the router is working when connected to my laptop via ethernet. It is NOT working via its wireless antenna. Is there a simple way to turn on the wireless antenna or is this a hardware problem in which I would need a new router?

You would need to log into the router as an administrator (using the wired computer) and check the configuration settings.

  1. Open a new browser tab or session.
  2. Enter the IP address of the router. Linksys / Cisco routers use "http://192.168.1.1"

Netgear may (or may not) use the same address.

  3. At this point, you should see an administrative login page.
  4. You will then need the login id and password (often defaulted to blank or null).
  5. Once you are in, you can check or change configuration settings.

Yes, there is a radio-on button. Connect to the router using your computer, log in, and it’s in setup somewhere. I just helped a friend with this very problem.

"There’s no simple way to just turn on the wireless antenna?"

I don't have Netgear equipment, so I can't say for sure, but it looked like you could look at pages 3-8, 3-9 and following to concentrate on the wireless connection. I didn't see a simple switch. The fact that your wireless used to work and then just quit argues that something happened in your configuration settings. You could also try a reset by pushing the reset button on the back with something small and pointed. As someone else pointed out, that might require you to establish a new password both on the router and then each of your computers. Sorry to make this complicated.

What’s the login name and password? I couldn’t get in.
