Weekly Gardening Thread

Good morning gardeners. As many of you may know, my wife is a manager at a Wal-Mart Superstore. About a month or so ago she was approached, via email, by Wal-Mart, informing her that there was a position opening up in one of their stores in Shreveport, La. and they wanted to do a phone interview with her if she was interested. She agreed and did the interview. Well last week they called her back and told her the position was hers if she wanted it. We were given an hour to make the decision. Job wise this is a good move for her and Shreveport is her hometown and a few of her family still live there or near there. She has 4 brothers and 4 sisters. The decision for her was easy but for me it was very hard to agree to the move. We own the property and the small house here in Meridian. This house and property will be very hard to sell. We will have to find a rental house that has a fenced in yard and that will accept our two dogs.
The reason for me sharing this information with all of you is, I may not be able to keep posting the Weekly Gardening Thread and I don’t know if I will even be able to have a garden next year. So I am hoping someone in the gardening community will be willing to continue the thread on a reliable and weekly basis. Currently there are 490 Freepers on the ping list and quite a few look forward to the thread every week. I am hoping at least one or even more of you would like to do the posting or even share the responsibility in posting the thread and keep it going.
They said that they want her in Shreveport sometime after Christmas but have not given a specific date yet. I will be staying here and keep posting and she will be staying with one of her sisters until she can find a suitable house.
The store she is being transferred to is on the extreme west side of Shreveport and she is looking in the Marshall, Tx area for housing. So if any of you know anything about the area please let me know.
Weekly Gardening Thread

Our hens are now laying productively and our five Maran pullets are four months old. Chocolate brown shelled eggs two months away.
I finished the duck dorm and wired the coops and pens permanently so they have heated quarters for winter. The doorways are too low and Barb keeps whacking her head!
We are about ready for the snow season. I want to try and till the raised beds this weekend and install the wall panels on the south side of the carport. I am going to enclose the end with openings for two 9' by 7' garage doors and put in a mezzanine and convert the carport to a real garage.
Plenty to get done before my left shoulder replacement surgery next spring.

Excellent! Great looking veggies. What type of peppers are those?
Managed to get one more picking of salad before the real cold temps hit. Eating on it like crazy, I figure the more vitamins I can consume before winter the better.
Got the garlic and winter onions planted and the plastic tunnel put together. I tamped them in pretty good this time to see if I can avoid them pushing out when the ground freezes. Nice hard rain the next day so I’m hoping that will work.
The garden is done for this year, now it’s time to crack open the catalogs and see what new wonders await.
There are chili peppers and California Wonder, Somewhere in there are 2 of the indian super hot ones for the Kimchi I am going to make my son.. Kimchi, UCK!
The prospect of having y'all join us as Louisianans is exciting, but the Marshall Tx area is beautiful and I know you'll find it suitable. There are several small towns out that way that will make a nice home, but there are a few towns east of Shreveport that would make nice hometowns too. Great gardening soil out that way in the piney woods. Known for growing the finest of peaches and other fruits.
Freezing temps here in Central Missouri have my garden chores down to cleanup, mulching and waiting for spring.
Oh, wow....great for your wife, but know how you feel...having moved about 10 times (major) in 25 years....and planted gardens from OREGON to Saskatchewan...it’s challenging, but having family close should be helpful. I look forward to these threads (don’t post much)....will miss your postings...but, look forward to new ones.
On another note....it’s 24 degrees here in Western Oregon this a.m......bbrrrr

Congratulations on your wife’s new challenge and I can imagine how it affects you and your routine there in Meridian. Does Wal-Mart offer any extended relocation programs like buying you out of your home and helping you find a acceptable place in the new work area? I must say that these weekly garden threads are the highlight of my week and by far the most enjoyable.
On the local scene we have had several days of frost with overnight temps 5 to 8 degrees lower than average. Not much damage that isn’t expected at season end. The Garlic is all up and we will take the bird netting off soon unlike last year when we waited too long as we stripped off a lot of growth on the plants but no damage done as we had a great crop. The Raspberries are still producing but the birds are keeping them from going to waste.
Greetings from Missouri. We are totally overcast at 36 degrees and on our way to 16 tonight. A gray day for sure. This thread does indeed always bring a little feeling of sunshine to my world.
Congratulations to your wife, but she’s got to find a place with a little gardening space, or at least a big deck for global buckets - right? Smart to live in Texas. Has that region had any rainfall?
Winter garden is full of lettuce. Indoor garden has a couple of cherry tomatoes and a lemon ready for harvest, one serving of spinach left, and several new ones are growing. Basil is going to have to be harvested - It is totally over running it’s container.

LOL. My garden chores are down to reading catalogs and computer research huddled in front of the space heater.(except for the indoor garden, which is not much effort).
JADB, of course you would be a great choice to help RD through this transition. I can’t imagine anyone objecting. You were the first person I thought of by the way.

Got my Baker Creek seed catalog Thursday and already have a list started for seeds.
