Friends and foes of Lady Thatcher give their verdict on Meryl Streep's film portrayal

Maggie to a T, except the walk

Edwina Currie (junior health minister under Thatcher)

Towering above everything else in this wonderful movie is the magnificent performance of Meryl Streep, whose majestic portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady confirms that she is the greatest screen actress of modern times.

What is so outstanding is how she captures the essence of Margaret’s personality, right down to the curl of her lip. This is no mere imitation. It shows what Margaret was really like. Streep’s screen character embodies Margaret’s steely determination, overlaying a considerable sense of insecurity.

As the film so powerfully reveals, that insecurity was bred from the feeling of being an outsider in Tory politics — not only as a woman in a male-dominated world, but also as the daughter of a Lincolnshire shopkeeper.

As a female politician hailing from the same kind of background, brought up in a northern household with a father who ran a small business, I always strongly identified with Margaret and empathised with her battles against the patriarchal establishment. Throughout the film, which is released next month, the image of Margaret in the kitchen washing up the teacups is used to highlight the sexism she had to endure.

About time they made a film about the woman who helped overthrow the Evil Empire of patriarchal sexism.

Over done and exaggerated emphasis on her dementia... (of course).

I, personally, cannot stand Streep...but...she is a damn fine actress.

Agreed. Lets not forget the formidable Jeane Kirkpatrick either. I had the privilege to hear her speak once. Incredible. A lioness crossed with genius.

What days those were. Reagan, Thatcher, Walesa, John Paul II. Those were titans. Since then we have had only pygmies.

By chance, we watched Streep in The Devil Wears Prada last night. We thought it was pretty good—but Streep makes just about any movie good. She is one of our most versatile actresses, IMO.

She’s excellent in any role she attempts. It’s too bad she’s such a lib.

Yep—it seems like the majority of “artistes” are lib. I think that’s probably because most of them spend a lot of time in a fantasy world.

One thing that I’ve notices is the Ms Streep has very unattractive hands.........

That's what my husband always says about Barbra Streisand. I never notice such things.

I understand a number of people like her.

I think she overacts.

Kirkpatrick was a nemisis of Thatcher, because she wanted America to support a the tinpot Argentine fascist junta over Britain because she took Britain’s alliance with America for granted. Fortunately, Casper Weinberger won the day with persuading Reagan to back Thatcher (the latter two weren’t always busom buddies)...
