Three other parts that were noticeably missing or changed were Frodo moving out of Bag End at the beginning, the Scouring of the Shire at the end, and the Field of Cormallen.
I also wished they had done the great darkness for the battle at Minas Tirith, instead of the vague overcast of the movie.
I doubt they movie theatres would make it, just because I doubt its ability to be a commercial success.
The story is too unfamiliar with film audieances and it seems sort of open-ended, when audiences like films that do end.

When these sorts of book-vs-movie debates come up, I just say, “The movies are the movies and the books are the books. If I want to know what happened in The Lord of the Rings, I go look it up in Tolkien’s books.”
She was part of the “White Council” that took on the Necromancer (Sauron in disguise) that is mentioned in “The Hobbit book. She wanted Gandalf to be the head of the council rather than Saruman.
Cirdan-—the older elf in beginning of FOTR that puts on a ring and also the elf in the background when everyone is leaving on the ship in ROTK—— is also a member. I hope he appears in the movie as he ties everything back to the beginning.
In honor of Jackson's latest "offering", I t hought I'd better "bone-up" on middle-earth. So, I've just finished reading the trilogy. But before that I went through The Silmarillion, and The Hobbit.
Years ago, I happened upon The Silmiarillion and attempted to read it (before I'd read anything else concerning Hobbits) and adopted the same attitude as your own.
I found though that after going through The Hobbit, The Fellowship - then seeing Jackson's rendition of middle-earth, I found The Silmarillion to actually be an enjoyable read. One reason for this I believe, is simply that in the Silmarillion, you almost immediately are overwhelmed with so names and characters - and no categories with which to sort them out...
I have listened over and again to the Dwarven song. It sends chills up the back of my neck.
I hope they sing the rest of that magnificent poetry in the movie.
I don’t think there will be too many conflicts with the story. Sir Ian McKellan was famous for running around the LOTR set with a copy of the trilogy pointing out mistakes.

It would be interesting to see Jackson portray Morgoth - as compared to Sauron and/or the balrog.
Both of which of course, were mere two-bit hoods compared to the “big man”.
Also, to see Glorfindel contest the balrog - good theater indeed!
I do remember that it was a few years that Frodo had stayed in Bag End, after Bilbo had left, before Gandalf had reappeared to find that ring. This probably could have been portrayed better that it was years and not months between Bilbo’s 111th birthday and the time Gandalf returned.
I also remember the scouring of the Shire, where Saruman was going to tear down the village and how he lost the power in his voice.
I don’t offhand remember the Field of Cormallen though.

He died in the West.
In Tolkein’s world, elves were naturally immortal did not die naturally. If they were killed, they woild be reborn with all of their memories intact.
Man and halflings were not immortal and could not become immortal. They would die after living their pre-determined lifespan, even if they lived in a place where things didn’t naturally die.
You want to see Smaug, I want to HEAR Smaug. For me, Richard Boone has been Smaug. I want to hear Benedict Cumberbatch. I haven’t heard his voice much and I’m curious to know if he’ll do it justice.
