(CNN) -- The bodies of two ATV enthusiasts missing since Sunday in California's Mojave Desert were found Thursday after a massive search, authorities said.

Kern County, California, sheriff's Lt. Steve Hansen said the bodies of Daniel Preddy Carbonaro, 27, and Chris Wayne Rice, 29, were found and the search was ended. He had no additional details.

Carbonaro and Rice, both of Santa Barbara, California, had traveled to a remote corner of the desert with their girlfriends, hoping to test out Rice's new 2011 Polaris ATV, family members said. The area is popular with "off-roaders," campers and recreational enthusiasts.

"I am so sad to report it is official, Dan and Chris were found deceased," said the search's Facebook page, "Friends of the Chris Rice and Dan Carbonaro search." A memorial fund was set up on the site.

The two young men left a Randsburg, California, hotel about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, telling their girlfriends where they were headed and saying they'd be back within a few hours.

Very sad. Plunged hundreds of feet into a blind ravine in the dark.

" ... traveled to a remote corner of the desert with their girlfriends, ... "

And that's the last of the gf's the article mentions.

Test for recent sexual activity, test to see if DNA matches the two dead guys.

Just sayin'

The night swallows up headlights out there. Great for astronomy, but not for night riding.

I’ll never forget the first time I was going to ride my souped up rice rocket motorcycle down the 395/14 at night through there. For some stupid reason I had pictured myself being able to open it up because there’d be nothing for miles. But once I got going I realized that you can’t see anything out there at night... high-beam schmigh-beam. I crawled along at about 50 mph.

I don’t know what you think may have happened? Do you suspect that the two bodies aren’t the missing men but other guys?

That doesn’t sound like. “traveled to a remote corner of the desert with their girlfriends”, unless that’s a Hotel California” type.

No, the girls set the two up.

I've read nothing but the article cited in the post.

Was it a full moon?

Why are a couple of guys goin' to try out a new ATV at 230-3 AM ?

How loaded were they?

Meet a mule in the desert?

Many years ago, I used to hunt in that area. It was not a place where they should have been riding on a dark night. Full moon, clear sky - maybe.

Rest in peace.

They just needed some alone time.

I am all for a good “Murder She Wrote” mystery but this sounds pretty clear cut. Two young guys on an ATV... driving in a desert in the middle of a night and plunge off a cliff. Now... if during the autopsy, the ME finds bullet wounds... my spider senses will start tingling.

I used to hunt and explore down there back in the late '60s and early '70s. I would never ride an ATV around there in the dark, lots of old open mine shafts around Randsburg.

I try not to assume a conspiracy with something that can be chalked up to stupidity.

You don’t go screeming through the desert in the middle of the night.

Dark is different in the desert. I’ve hiked a lot in the early hours to avoid the heat. I’ve darn near walked off cliffs just walking in areas I didn’t know.

Chalk this up to darwin.

Three guys in the lake house next to ours decided to take a midnight ride in their speedboat and went under a dock cable at forty miles an hour.

They were beheaded.

I didn't think of turning it into some kind of conspiracy.

Maybe I missed something?

The night swallows up headlights out there. Great for astronomy, but not for night riding.

Same thing at Cape Hatteras, NC. Back in the days when you could drive off-road vehicles down to the point. (before the Audubon society and anti-development {expletives} made excuses to close the beaches - thanks to a lawsuit made possible by a $20M donation from Toyota, FUT) We used to lose a few vehicles into the surf every season. People would get rippin' along at night, headed south down the hard-pack sand, come over the rise at the point (where the beach turns sharply westward) and be irretrievably into the surf before the could hit the breaks. Out-driving their lights...

I don't understand. There's nothing in the article that suggests foul play. How did the girls set them up?

Why did they decide to take a midnight ride in a speedboat?

Was it a full moon?

Are you sure it was forty miles per hour... could it have been 38 miles per hour?

Was the dock cable always there or did YOU put it there? YOU had the lake house next door. What was your beef with them? Well... we’re waiting....

Randsburg is an old mining town that is now an in-place for desert off-roaders. Lot’s of open desert and few roads. I really don’t see anything too unusual in this story except the absence of a mention of alcohol.
