BREAKING: Rick Perry Files Lawsuit To Get On Virginia Primary Ballot
businessinsider.com ^ | 12/27/2011 | Zeke Miller

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has filed suit in federal court against the Virginia Republican Party and the Virginia Board of Elections in order to gain a spot on the Commonwealth's primary ballot. Perry was excluded after the party found he had not submitted enough valid signatures by the deadline last Thursday. His campaign submitted 6,000 of the required 10,000, according to the suit. The lawsuit alleges that Perry's 1st and 14th Amendment rights were violated by the requirement that those circulating the petitions also be eligible or registered voters of Virginia. Failure to get on the ballot is a major embarrassment for the struggling Perry campaign — but he is not alone. Another one-time GOP frontrunner, Newt Gingrich, also failed to qualify. "Gov. Perry greatly respects the citizens and history of the Commonwealth of Virginia and believes Virginia Republicans should have greater access to vote for one of the several candidates for President of the United States," Perry communications director Ray Sullivan said in a statement. "Virginia ballot access rules are among the most onerous and are particularly problematic in a multi-candidate election. We believe that the Virginia provisions unconstitutionally restrict the rights of candidates and voters by severely restricting access to the ballot, and we hope to have those provisions overturned or modified to provide greater ballot access to Virginia voters and the candidates seeking to earn their support."

Except that code, when looked at in whole, applies to local and state offices, not national offices.

At least, according to RedState...

If Shannon Bream’s IQ is over 65, I’d be shocked. She is as shallow as a gene pool from Deliverance.

The guidelines are willful, arbitrary and capricious ~ besides being an affront to humanity. They are the sort of thing that drives the Republican voting base into the enemy camp.

You want to lose Republican votes in Virginia, then you cheat ~ and you cheated.

The Romney camp are all a bunch of losers.

I love these threads.

They just suck the Mittbutts and Paultards right out of the woodwork!

Getting harder to tell them apart now days though.

I guess Newt was right then, judges aren’t fair.

After being in law school for two and a half years, I have more realization that many of them can be very biased.

YUP. The party can change its position real quick and everybody can be on the ballot.

The Virginia Lt. Governor is Romney's top guy in Virginia. He cheated. Romney seems to be happy with cheating.

“Krauthammer has been nothing short of shameful in his very personal attacks against Newt. ...He is just about totally dead to me now after years of respecting him.”

I so agree with you. He has totally disappointed me and I don’t care to hear him anymore and I had my TV on everyday at 5 pm (central time) because he was on that Fox program. It doesn’t matter anymore if I hear it or not. Really, this just crushed my good feeling about him.

What’s to stop Democrats (disguised or not) from being put on the Republican primary ballot by gathering unverified non-Republican signatures (and visa-versa)?

Always has been ~ either crooks, or incompetents, or Ku Kluxers, or lawyers living somewhere around Richmond, or whatever you want to call these people.

They have absolutely no empathy with the voting public.

This is just another example of the things I'd hope we could eliminate by limiting politicians to One Term One Time ~ they get to steal what they can but at the end of that term they go to the graveyard and are replaced by a totally new bunch. My theory is there'd be no lack of candidates!

There'd be no change in the quality either.

FOX has their own agenda this election. Have tuned it out.

Me too. The 24/7 anti-Newt rants just wore me out. Sorry to say but I will never view Fox News in the same way again. They have made “Fair and Balanced” into some kind of a joke.

It has been filed in the United States District Court not VA State Court.

Stipulate that they must be registered with the National Party is a candidate in that election. That is the only requirement that would be needed.

(I’m thinking out loud - maybe answering my own question.) I guess the issue is more that ONLY REPUBLICANS should be able to VOTE in the Republican primaries, so getting the names on the ballot shouldn’t be as difficult as they seem to be making it.

What a wimpy state! Here in New York, we challenge signatures for using the wrong color ink. Nobody, but nobody, can get on the ballot.

We debate this one long enough we get the Perri Caliente acolytes too don't we.

Here's a thought for you and everyone else ~ what Bolling and Romney engineered here is ELECTION FRAUD of a sort it's going to take years for us to live down.

It's the type found most often in Chicago and particularly popular with Obama and his runningdog lackeys.

Makes it difficult for real Republicans to denounce Democrats for campaign and vote fraud.

I think Romney and his crowd should apologize and withdraw from the race ~ just like that Congressman who was peddling his body on Craig's list. Boehner was absolutely correct to pull the plug on that clown, and now that the evidence is in that Romney and Bolling are clowns of equal consequence to Republican futures, they've gotta' go too.
