direct link to an MSNBC.com video clip embedded in the UK Daily Mail article shows @6:54 a Dr. John Whyte, MD, Phd, Director or MRRI state the active ingredient of Ambien, 'Zolpidem' is the trigger for increased blood flow to the brain, particularly in areas related to language comprehension.

Now the video report goes on to state that there are no studies to determine dosages or even if this is a viable treatment since fewer than 10% of brain injuries respond at all to Ambien. The dosages don't last long, and each successive dose given in the same 24 hour period may not last as long as the earlier dose.

Sam, the twenty three year old subject of the video report had eight massive strokes and suffered catastrophic brain damage. Given the above information, one wonders if it is possible to run a trial dose on a patient, like Sam, who has responded to a dose of 'Zolpidem', but this time, administer the dose in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to see if the dose lasts longer or yields longer lasting results.

This 'miracle' awakening reminds me of the 1990 film based on a similar story called, "Awakenings" with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams.

It would have been worth trying. My husband took Ambien for a while after his stroke. We didn’t see any remarkable effects from it, but his neurologist kept him on it for several months. It helped him sleep at night so he could be more alert during the day, and I suppose it probably helped with blood flow.

What Terri needed more than anything else was to be cared for by the family who loves her.

No doubt, her POS "husband" would have done everything possible to ensure that she never would have received it.
