2012: The Year of Cold Fusion?

If this topic is new to you, the really short summary is that the E-Cat is a Low Energy Nuclear Reaction (LENR) or “cold fusion” device that generates large amounts of heat for a miniscule cost.

I first wrote about the E-Cat and its implications in my Backspin column in Network World back in October and then again a couple of weeks later here in my Forbes Technobable blog. Since then I have covered various aspects of the topic ... here’s the list:

------------------------
Why so many postings on this topic? Simple … as I pointed out at some length in the first columns, should Rossi’s E-Cat work as claimed, it will transform the world making oil, coal, and conventional nuclear power along with wind and solar power obsolete as energy sources.

Alas,... the question of whether the E-Cat really works remains unproven because over the last year the E-Cat’s inventor, Andrea Rossi, has given a number of impressive but inconclusive demonstrations. These were inconclusive because they weren’t run in such a way as to remove doubt about what’s really going on and whether more energy was being generated by the E-Cat than was being put into it.

.

If the whole thing is a fraud it’s going to be one of the greatest in modern times. If it’s not, 2012 is going to be the year when everything changes.

Now that Rossi has his 10k orders he says he start selling small E-cats in the Autumn of this year.

Whether he means delivery or just more order taking...who knows. So until then he can issue a series of breathless announcements of progress on process to possess the water heaters.

How about 5 years from today?
Rossi is claiming (LINK) that he's going to make one million E-Cat modules this year! Why in the world would it take 5 years to prove or disprove his claims?

Of course, all it takes is one E-Cat, given to an independent and trustworthy lab to prove or disprove Rossi's claims. Rossi spent most of last year stating that he would allow the University of Bologna to do such testing. But then, at the last minute, he decided to withhold his device from any legitimate testing facility.

His fans are claiming that this is some sort of "brilliant" strategy to convince people of, um, well, something. A more reasonable explanation is that he knows an independent test would prove that his gadget doesn't work.

Powder..patch..ball FIRE!

Plus with hot fusion there are known rates of reaction with very predictable and consistent results.

Hey White Noise, how ya doing. What hot fusion where?

I understand that you are ABSOLUTELY convinced that Rossi is a scam. If that is true, would you consider a private wager with me? How about $100? We need a time limit to discover is Rossi is a scam or not. How about 5 years from today?

If the United States ever gets one per cent or more of its energy from ecats, I'll resign from FR and send Kevmo a courtesy note beforehand. I've already made that promise and I'll add you to the list if you like. If it's the world changing technology that the fan boys claim, one percent is a small hurdle. Plus there's no time limit. I don't require a sacrifice in kind because I know I'll never have to pay up (Plus Kevmo is an immature narcissist who will never admit he's wrong about Rossi and the ecat.).

My interest in LENR comes from years of visiting DOE and USAF labs where “cold fusion” experiments were quietly being pursued by some damn good scientists. Some of those scientists told me that they just did not understand why they got inconsistent results.

When legitimate scientists say they get inconsistent results and can't explain it, that's significant. How can any theory ever explain it? Compare today's cold fusion with muon catalyzed cold fusion. Within a year of it being observed it was explained by theory, and that's with technology and knowledge from over 50 years ago.

IMHO, this is because there is a lot more to learn in the world of physics.

Until we discover the TOE, there will still be a lot more physics to learn. After that scientists can dedicate their time to engineering.

2012: The Year of Cold Fusion?

Yes indeedy! It will be a cold fusion-apalooza this year. The last 20 or so were just a warm up to the grand unveiling. (snicker)

Rossi's latest claim is that he will be selling residential E-Cat units for $1000 - $1500, starting this fall. Rossi says that he is in talks with Home Depot to distribute the units. [LINK]

I'm eagerly waiting for Home Depot to confirm this.

Of course, I'm still eagerly waiting for any customer to come forward, or for Rossi to allow any independent organization to test his gadget, or for Rossi to release any independent information about the isotopic analysis that was supposed to be available by Christmas, and so on.

I just emailed the media relations people at Home Depot to see if they would confirm or deny Rossi's latest statement.

Since Rossi has mentioned it publicly, presumably there is no reason for Home Depot not to also acknowledge it.

We'll see what, if anything, Home Depot has to say.

This wouldn't be the first time that Rossi or one of his myrmidons tried to associate the ecat scam with a legitimate company. Kleiner Perkins is the first that comes to mind. The other was National Instruments I believe.

I had to laugh at the first two paragraphs at your link:
Not afraid to enter a specialty that kills careers, Mr. Rossi says, “To work in this field you have to be absolutely non-reactive towards controversy.”

The reason he had success, out of thousands of attempts, was because “we did not lose our time in controversy. We just let everybody say what they wanted.”

Here is an example of Rossi's non-reactivity:
About the snakes: the time of the snakes is over. The start up of the 1 MW plant is the end of the mental masturbations of enviuos, wannabe theorists, lecturers of calorimetry and engineering. Now LENR goes to the market. The test will not be made by me, but by the Customers’ consultants. Time of chatters is over. Maybe the test will not be good, maybe: it will be the first time I will start up a plant of that dimension, but in this case the problem will be the Customer, not the bunch of imbeciles that instead of understanding that we actually made LENR a reality lose their time digging holes on the surface the water in the middle of the ocean to find the wine. And in the case this test will go not well, we will learn and remake another, and another, and another, but, be sure, we will arrive to the target. At any cost."

LOL! Thanks. That's the funniest thing I've read this morning. Home Depot, that's damn hilarious. Spencer's Gifts maybe, or sell them from the back page of comic books along with the x-ray glasses and sea monkeys. LOL!

I tracked that link down for you. Rossi is connected to folks in the US who are well tied in with Department of Energy for alternative energy sources. They have a $90 mil contract to provide consultants ~ and do stuff.

That's OBAMA ~ he's at this place. His peeps are involved. But for a guy who just blew through $6 trillion, $90 million is chump change.

yup, in the sun’s corona ~ you don’t have the pressure there ~ plenty of heat, but it’s rather diffuse.

Many basements are cold, so can’t blame Kevmo if this is the reason for his intense interest.
