The giant Black Tiger shrimp that Ron Pockrus caught off the Texas coast might be the biggest threat to the $700 million Gulf shrimp industry to come along in years, marine biologists said.
Pockrus, the owner of a 13-vessel shrimp fleet operating out of Brownsville, caught the 12-inch, 13-ounce specimen last week.
Pockrus said he’s been aware of the species for about three years but hadn’t seen one. Now, he has turned in two to marine and wildlife officials this season.
“I have another boat coming in with one on it now,” Pockrus said. “That makes the third one we’ve picked up.”
The Black Tiger shrimp is indigenous to the eastern coast of Africa. Its ranges to the Indo-Pacific region and south to Australia.
Black Tigers can grow to 13 inches and weigh as much as a pound

What I find to have an extremely destructive and disastrous effect on Gulf ecosystems is Gulf Shrimpers dragging their down riggers through gulf sea grass.
But hey, I only fish ther and sail there/
Okay, what’s “Old Bay” and is that 3 minutes per side or will they cook through?
Truthfully, I haven’t eaten anything but wild-caught shrimp since I learned they are raised in septic tanks and imported from China.

Old Bay is a brand name of Chesapeake Bay seasoning. Great, but J.O. is better, IMHO.
Guess I’ll just have catfish instead.
I would think, genetically, these tigers (?the ‘tiger’ shrimp I’ve seen for sale in TX are always blue, not black)
would have an impossible time burrowing into the sandy GOM bottom as our pink, white and brown ones do to escape predators.
I wonder if the lack of hurricanes in the GOM has anything to do with their being populous enough to catch.
How they got here? Water in hatches from ships coming West carried the larvae, I suppose, as I think all shrimp breed in estuaries. That’s what we were taught, anyhow.
I think this tiger has enough bad things going for it, like me, who’d scoop them up if they became commercially available here.
I will NOT eat Tilapia and people always seem surprised by it. What a nasty fish.

Old Bay is better.
I was wondering what happened to the Tiger shrimp, I hadn’t seen them in the stores lately.
They are not as tasty as the Texas gold Shrimp and the shell is much harder and more shell weight as opposed to shrimp meat weight.
I can and have eaten them, but they do lack taste, even with Old Bay.
By the way Old Bay is good with anything including potato chips and cooked beef.I use it anywhere red pepper is used.including on fried Chicken.

I’ll put Old Bay on just about anything except a steak.
Baked potatoes, popcorn, broccoli/cauliflower, the tuna steak I had yesterday...and definitely chicken.
I don’t know if you have frozen, shelled crawfish tails in your store but whip up an alfredo sauce with Old Bay and the ‘dads, over fresh linguine is divine. Add the thawed tails at the last minute as they are already cooked.
I can tell y’all how to make the best calamari ever, if anyone needs to know how.

I will never buy Chinese farm shrimp.. those farms are filthy and so they dump antibiotics into the water..
I want US caught wild shrimp
