I read here on FR a few years ago about this whole thing really screwing Iraqi farmers as well.

Many small farmers and friends put real effort into the Tester Amendment (amendment to exempt small farmers) to S. 510 (”Food Safety Modernization Act”). In the near future, that Amendment could save many Americans from starvation or much higher food prices. Big agricultural and other global interests fought hard to keep that Amendment from passing and to prevent small competition. Big, government-linked businesses have also used environmental and “property values” arguments to stop new small business starts for decades. Be vigilant. Defend property rights and work to repeal regulations against new small businesses and property rights of small land owners.
