VINTAGE COMPUTER QUESTIONS

Posted on 02/01/2012 8:20:48 PM PST by mamelukesabre

I am trying to find info on 3 different computers. First, the Compaq Desk Pro 386 of 1986...how much did it cost brand new when it was first hit the stores? Second, the same info for the HP Vectra 486 of 1990. And finally, what make of computer offered for sale the very first pentium I 60Mhz computer and what was the model name/number?

IBM PC had an 8088 CPU and came out in the early 80s. So that’s not it.

After reading this thread and the fact that I am in the process of building a new computer (specs below) and installing a home server, just goes to show what happens when the Federal Government stays out of the way.

New Computer

Intel I5 2500K CPU
AsRock Z98 Pro Gen2 Mother board
16 Gigs of PC1600 DDR3 Memory
ATI Radeon 6870 Video Card
318 Gigs of SSD Drives
3TB of Traditional Hard Drives
3 DVD-R Drives
27 In LED backighted Monitor

HP Proliant NL40 Server
3TB of Enterprise level hard drives
Cyberpower PFC UPS

And I am doing all of this for less than $2000.00

“$6,499!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

how much is that in 2012 dollars?”

Well, to put it in perspective:

I bought a brand new car in 1986 for 4 bucks less than that.

Quattropro, that brings back memories. Anyone use Geoworks, the GUI that windows copied?

The J680 came out in the late nineties I think and I was involved in big disk arrays by then, and retired a few years later. You might Google it and find some information though.

Where are you getting these figures? I havn’t been able to find diddly on the internet.

Really? I dropped this into google: Compaq Desk Pro 386 of 1986 price

And received this link as the 4th hit.

In fact, the google summary of the page shows the price ($6499) so you don't even have to follow the link.

I thought I was the only one :O

I always preferred Word Perfect over Word (and Wordstar too) and Quatro over Lotus :)

I won’t use google. Period.

But you said in post #4 that you already used google. Sorry, I'm just working with contradictory data.

Are you trying to be a pain it the ass? Surely you know that the VERB “google” is not the same as the NOUN “google”.

First, get bent; your attitude really sucks. You post a thread here because you're unwilling or unable to use internet search tools properly, and when you're offered help on your search skills you get your back up. I said that I was sorry for directing you to Google and that it was due to conflicting posts.

Second, post 2 does not use "google" as a verb, so your reply of "I already tried that" seems to indicate that you already tried Google.

Sheesh. Take some Midol and lay down.

I’m not here to talk grammar with ya buddy. You wanna diagram sentences, do it with someone else. You KNOW “google” is not just a brand name. So just knock it off.
