An American Indian tribe sued some of the world's largest beer makers Thursday, claiming they knowingly contributed to alcohol-related problems on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota said it is demanding $500 million in damages for the cost of health care, social services and child rehabilitation caused by chronic alcoholism on the reservation.

So the tribal officials want the beer makers and store owners to do what the tribe could not do for itself and they want the beer companies to pay for what they already pay for through taxes.
Until the Indians individually recognize they have a problem with alcohol and determine that must do something about it themselves they will have a problem with alcohol.
Probably the only solution for the Indian alcohol problem is to wean them off of the government teat. The Indians have no jobs and do not need them because the government provides their every basic need. They have lots of time and nothing better to do outside of a bottle.
ABC Story
I smell another huge wealth redistribution “settlement”. No wonder Barry’s approval numbers are skyrocketing. The freeloaders’ ship has finally come and and Barry the Kenyan Guy is the Captain.
An Indian waitress at a little cafe hubby and I go to now and then told us how the Democrats set cases of beer outside the voting places as a little treat for them. She was born and raised on the reservation and moved to Michigan few years ago..
You can’t sue yourself to sobriety. You can’t spend yourself rich.
My cousin used to work in a place in Mt. Pleasant and dealt with the Chippewa who were of course getting considerable casino money. Man, did she ever have some stories, and not good ones.
“The Indians have no jobs and do not need them because the government provides their every basic need. They have lots of time and nothing better to do outside of a bottle.”
I think you nailed it. Look at all the problems that the welfare state has caused in the black community. Indians have been living under a similar Federal paternalism for much longer, so it’s no wonder they have problems.
You apparently don’t know what you’re talking about. In virtually every treaty signed with Indian tribes, there is an exchange in perpetuity of health care, education and other considerations for the square miles of land ceded by the U.S. government. There is no government teat. There is a treaty signed by bona fide representatives of the United States of America. Or are you one of those who thinks the United States doesn’t have to keep it’s part of a good faith treaty?
Wither those benefits are the result of treaty or welfare the result is the same the tribes are living on government money.
Legally they have no grounds to sue for compensation of expenses they did not incur.
Next, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donuts will sue food manufacturers for their obesity.
The next lawsuit should be against the makers of Listerine and Wal-Mart.
Good points.
If the tribe manages to put the beer store out of business it will not reduce the demand for beer on the reservation. At best it will reduce the supply temporarily.
Once the offending beer store is eliminated one of two things will occur; another store featuring beer prominently will open to replace the sued in to bankruptcy store, second one or more black market suppliers of beer will emerge.
What this tribe leadership seems to want is what occurs in some southern states as dry counties. I am sure our southern Freepers can tell us how effective dry county laws are in keeping citizens sober when they have the inclination to imbibe of alcoholic beverages.
