After getting into a 170 comment Facebook argument with one of my lovely friends from school about a status I posted with a joke about Atheism, people came up to me in the following days and questioned my reasoning for doing something like that. People advised me to keep all political and religious ideas off of Facebook, to avoid conflict. This incident made me realize how much people hate conflict. But on another level, this advice bothered me. People will forgo any talk about religious or political views just to avoid a conflict or to make sure they don't offend anyone? I think this is a dangerous path to be on.

Someone’s a spineless blog pimp.
Since most people except Freepers are idiots to a certain degree when it comes to politics or religion ..... Getting into an argument is mostly pointless
Most people love to wallow in their own ignorance....especially liberals,....
Facebook is part of “social media” and we have always been told to avoid discussions of politics or religion in social settings. What’s new?
I was born before WW 2 and in polite society the 2 things you never talk about were politic’s and religion. Both can get you shot or you can lose a good friend over what gets said..........the let it all hang out society started in the 60’s...When you attack either one of those subjects your attacking a persons deeply held ideas....not a good idea. The only politics I ever remember in my home was on voting day. Dad would get out of his chair, and say...”well I guess I better go void your mothers vote”.. and off he would go to vote...mom would give him a dirty look and go back to reading her book....
During the last election I had a friend say she doesn’t post much about politics because half her friends supported Obama and half McCain. I responded and said half her friends were idiots. If they looked at my info FreeRepulic was listed.
My grandpa always told my grandma “there’s no use in us voting since we will cancel each other out”. Then he would go vote on his lunch break.
I’d personally be in favor of keeping religion off of Free Republic because I feel that Conservatives of all persuasions need to stick together — but Facebook?
My Facebook page is 80 to 90% political postings, including a lot of stuff that I can say there that I can’t say here. If people don’t like it they can go self-copulate.
I am not afraid to lose friends on facebook ;-)
If you feel confident in posting something to your own profile, go for it.
For over a decade the New Left (Remember 68) has sought to politicize every corner of the internet. From music and sports discussions to IMDB comments and reviews. There are teams who do nothing but vote up/down news articles on yahoo.
So, if one of your friends can’t take a dig at atheism on your own page, tell them Godloves them all the same.
LOL sneaky grandpa
Yeah, they had a curious relationship. She worshiped the ground he walked on and never let a chance go by to brag what an incredible man he was, even though you’d think they’d hate each other.
She was a stay at home mom...came from a long line of dirt poor tea-totalling bible thumpers of true blue WASP lineage. She never had a paycheck job in her life. Her mother was a school teacher and from a long line of school teachers. She dropped out of high school and refused to be a school teacher and married a Danish(gasp!) immigrant(double gasp!) who NEVER went to church, refused to go to church, never finished high school, and drank and smoked at the BREAKFAST TABLE! He was a staunch conservative and she thought conservatives were silly ignorant children.
They had 3 kids. 2 of them developed my grandmother’s political philosophies but my grandfather’s habits and my mother developed the opposite habits and politics.
My mother never held a pay check job either...one of the reasons was families could not afford 2 cars and women were suppose to raise their own children. I was an end of the depression baby. 1939
Unfortunately people can’t keep their tempers when discussing these things because it becomes too personal. Generally the women want to keep the peace at family gatherings so these subjects are taboo.
Plus the libs cannot stand any factual information which destroys their claims. Most just “don’t want to talk about it anymore” after a few well-aimed shots at their assumptions and lies.
