Word For The Day, Wednesday, 2/22/12
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
shrive; verb
1. to impose penance on (a sinner). 2. to grant absolution to (a penitent). 3. to hear the confession of (a person).
Etymology: O.E. scrifan "assign, decree, impose penance," from W.Gmc. *skriban (cf. O.S. scriban, O.Du. scrivan, Du. schrijven "to write;" O.N. skrjpt "penance, confession"), an early borrowing from L. scribere "to write" (see script).
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
Much more courageous, politically, than his father, Franklin Graham is not willing to shrive Obama's sins. I was tremendously impressed with his answers yesterday on Morning Joe, and hope he's not backtracking today. Of course, lefties are having the opposite reaction and saying he's NOT his dad, as if that's a bad thing. Billy gave cover to lots of lefties, Franklin appears to "get it" and isn't willing to do so.
Mik will recognize this word from his page-a-day email which he was kind enough to share with me. Happy Ash Wednesday everyone, time to be shriven!

Orthodox Great Lent starts next Monday, which is called Clean Monday. Next week, we shall have the opportunity to attend services of the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, which is about sin and repentence.

When this has been done, that is the signal for many Orthodox Christians to start preparing for Holy Confession. Then we shall go to Confession and be shriven!
