Google to Sell Heads-Up Display Glasses by Year’s End
NY Times via Kurzweil.net ^ | Feb. 21, 2012 | By NICK BILTON

People who constantly reach into a pocket to check a smartphone for bits of information will soon have another option: a pair of Google-made glasses that will be able to stream information to the wearer’s eyeballs in real time.

According to several Google employees familiar with the project who asked not to be named, the glasses will go on sale to the public by the end of the year. These people said they are expected “to cost around the price of current smartphones,” or $250 to $600.

The people familiar with the Google glasses said they would be Android-based, and will include a small screen that will sit a few inches from someone’s eye. They will also have a 3G or 4G data connection and a number of sensors including motion and GPS.

A Google spokesman declined to comment on the project.

Seth Weintraub, a blogger for 9 to 5 Google, who first wrote about the glasses project in December, and then discovered more information about them this month, also said the glasses would be Android-based and cited a source that described their look as that of a pair of Oakley Thumps.

I want a targeting app so I no longer have to look down the sights - where I'm aiming will have crosshairs on the HUD.

People will try driving with the glasses on, and then they’ll have a blind spot right in front to them instead of to their left. That ought to make it even more interesting driving with dummies.

I can envision geeks crashing into trees...as a google pop-up ad totally blocks their vision.

Funny, but FYI, Google doesn't do pop-ups. Ever. It's policy.

Sounds like a new rash of cases of vertigo for the neurologists to treat. I can’t wait to see someone driving while wearing a pair of those. Texting swervers are bad enough.

Sounds like another road hazard to me.

I drive a short sport car and frequently have to veer away from some inconsiderate dipshit talking/texting on the phone, even though California has outlawed it, which I'm okay with. Their right of free speech is superseded by my right of life.

Sheese, I see the soccor-mom's on the phone in my own neighborhood just a yacking away to this day. Really? They couldn't have made the call before they left home or when I see them heading into our cul-de-sac and get home?

Just what us fwy people need, another distraction. /s

Google's glasses sounds like the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode The Game: where the plot involves Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) saving the crew from an addictive game that is played while wearing special glasses. Google is evil.

I thought about the issue of “driving hazard” as well. But don’t Air Force fighter pilots already use something along these lines? I’m honestly not sure. But if they can do it at 500 mph (or whatever) then it may not be as big a problem as we imagine.

But as a pedestrian I’m not looking forward to the guinea pig stage.....

The Star Trek: TNG episode where a computer game is played through a visor worn by the player springs to mind. Hmmmm.

"...anti driving with HUD glasses laws passed in 5 4 3....."

Hopefully. My right to life supersedes their right to watch crap and drive. Screw them. I hope these glasses are outlawed. Do you have any idea how many accidents are caused by kids while talking/texting while driving even when handling their smart phones at steering wheel level, which most don't? I just read a large percentage. Great, give them another tool to distract them from paying attention to the road so as to kill or maim someone else. /s.

Hell, let's make alcohol legal down to learner permit age./s As if teens and others are not killed enough every year on our hwys because of stupidity.

As I mentioned above, your rights stop at the point they infringe upon my rights. People talking/texting or future viewing while driving are a hazard to my and my wife's health. Too bad. Wait till you are frigging home, or pull over!

5...4...3 until these dumb as glasses are outlawed. I say good.

The stuff in the Air Force’s HUD is flight related, basically a bunch of the information on their dash board so they don’t have to look away from their flight to see it. Not youtube videos.
