"Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Spock"?

The first photos from the set of the sequel to 2009's "Star Trek" have leaked, and from what we can see it looks like it will be just as action-packed as its predecessor. What's more, the shots give us the first look at the villain from the film currently in production.

The photos show Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana returning to the roles of Spock and Uhura, along with new cast member Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays their still-unnamed adversary. The actors were photographed while they rehearsed and shot a fight scene on a large exterior set in front of a green screen (the background will be added in later digitally).

Benedict Cumberbatch is a British actor who broke out playing the lead role in "Sherlock," the BBC's modern-day Sherlock Holmes series. In 2011, he appeared in two critically acclaimed films: "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" opposite Gary Oldman, and Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated "War Horse." It had originally been announced that Benicio del Toro would be the bad guy in the new "Star Trek," but after he dropped out of the project Cumberbatch was cast in his place.

(As I like to call it New Trek).

If he’s suppose to be Khan, I’m not impressed with the costume or anything, and is he actually resisting Spock’s nerve pinch? Wha—?

Must be on your system. I can view the full article just fine, sans Bill Maher’s advertisement.

Aww cool! I love Benedict Cumberbatch. Has everyone seen his Sherlock series? It is awesome.

Leave it to JJ Abrams to pick talent!

Did Zachary Quinto (SPOCK) come out as a full-fledged HOMO, crying his eyes out because now he’s “accepted”?

I haven’t seen the whole series, but what little I’ve seen impressed me.

I look forward to see what he will do in the second Star Trek movie.

Nah, I'd say DS9 and Enterprise are faux Trek. Quinto's a dead ringer for Nimoy, as this latest photo on the shooting of the 12th (NOT 2nd as the media keeps claiming) movie reminds us. I'd VERY glad they didn't take the standard Hollywood route "reimagining" the characters for "modern" audiences.

(The two dudes in the background and Quinto and Cumberbatch's stunt doubles)

Agreed. Why couldn’t they have invented a whole new cast? What’s wrong with that? What’s wrong with another cocky young captain? Maybe a full-blooded Vulcan for him to deal with? It’s just a little bit said that they can’t expand their horizon. Wasn’t there an idea for the generation after Next Generation that suffered a setback (i.e., Starfleet is broken up), they’re on their own, with a ship that is damaged, and they have to scavenge parts, find dilithium crystals, etc., while still dealing with other aliens as they try to find allies to rebuild Starfleet? I think that would have been great.

Replace the word "him" with "her" and you've just described the plot of Star Trek: Voyager. (1995-2001). Been there, done that.

Haha, I guess so. But...uh... Starfleet shambles? Hunh? Come on. I know, Voyager sucked.

Eh, Voyager was set post "Dominion War" stuff in DS9, so I guess you could say Starfleet was in shambles. Certainly by the time they got home at the end of the show. And the show started with the whole Maquis conflict from TNG so that was a big crisis in Starfleet.

As long as the new movie doesn't rehash any old plots from TOS, I'll be happy. I'm hopefully the guy Benedict Cumberbatch is playing is new to the franchise. Though these "KHANNNNNNNNNN!" fanboy idiots on the internet continually insist he's playing Khan no matter how unlike the actor is to the character (white lanky british guy playing buff Indian Sikh warlord?)
