Supermarkets are designed to promote impulse buying by leading shoppers through a maze of aisles.
But something incredible has happened since the recession. Shoppers are going only to select aisles. And this is killing store margins.
UBS cites research from Kantar Retail:
Consumers are not going down most aisles at the frequency they used to. Today, the more common way to shop is to only go down select aisles. 50% of consumers shop this way, which is a 6% increase since 2008. Consumers are highly focused on specific sales and specific coupons when shopping conventional supermarkets. This strongly suggests consumers are cherry picking grocery stores.

I now walk through with tears.
HEB here in Houston is constantly moving things around. They’ve been doing this for a while. From week to week the bread may move from the middle of the store to the end.
Make a list and eat before you go will win every time.
My husband won’t eat anything buy Hellman’s light mayo. It pains me to pay that much for it, but he makes 6 figures, so how can I refuse? We CAN afford it, but it just gags me to spend that much for it.
In other news, the sun rose in the East this morning.
The easiest way to save money grocery shopping is to make sure you go AFTER you eat.
I occasionally join the words “used” and “food” together in a phrase, but I usually put the word “dog” in-between and it describes what I shovel up in the back yard. ;-P
Weirdest damn Recovery I’ve every seen!
“If not for government welfare programs, there would be riots in the streets and possibly outright revolution.”
I have an awful feeling that those are coming this Summer & Fall. Hope I’m wrong, but I’ve been stockpiling water/food/tp/ammo etc for a long time. Not, not a prepper; just wary of things under corrupt, criminal Obummer & Co.
Lost almost 20 pounds in 4 months.
uh........this thread has gotten so disgusting, I’ve got to move on. “Used Meat”; really?
Did you say “Used food??” I am sorry, but there are some things I just can’t buy second-hand....
Same here. I don’t shop; I buy. And I have no problem with leaving a store empty-handed if they don’t have what I’m looking for.
What the hell is used food? Used food is a turd.
It’s not new to me I’ve always shopped like this.I use a list and the only time I do go down other isles is to comparison shop. The more tie you are in the store the more likely you are to impulse buy which is where met people bust their budget.

I am finding the stores are now limiting variety of brands and going to smaller and smaller sizes.
I am noticing more lists and there is one truth they are skipping.
who wants to waste time in a grocery store? grocery shopping is not a fun event. it is akin to cutting the grass or taking out the garbage. Also smaller families, singles in particular eat out more at about the same price if you factor in the absence of any clean up.
