6 Stupid Things Pet Owners Need to Stop Doing Now

Pets are a wonderful thing. No matter how sad or depressing your life may be, it's always just a little bit better knowing you have a loyal pet by your side.

But being a pet owner is a tricky proposition. Something about being able to "own" a living thing seems to drive some people to the point of madness. Crazy cat ladies don't earn that title because of their rational behavior and robust social skills, you know?

You’re such a sweetheart. Pitties are just dogs, FGS. It’s nice to see you sticking up for them.

I have one right now at my feet begging for some jalapeno flavored sunflower seeds!

I largely agree with your list. Exotic pets should be limited to very few but there are people rich enough to properly have a private zoo.

Number 1 - You’re incorrect in the sense that the AKC does not set standards, breed clubs do. I suspect this guy gave this number 1 because he doesn’t know anything about dog health problems and thinks appearance has something to do with them.

My previous doggie got this problem at around age 8 ( she lived till 12). Two things worked:

1. when I lived in an apt that had a completely wall to floor small tiled shower ( she couldn’t feel the vibrations)

2,when I moved out of there —Valium, 2.5mg ( half of a 5mg tablet). the vet rx’d it..I gave her one just before the storm started or as it started..she was quiet and calm ..safe and effective. that’s the only time she got one.

when anyone crticizes me for anything I do about or with my doggie I say “You’re not paying my mortgage!”

that ends the discussion.ha.

I’m stuck in how often to feed my new rescued cat! Right now whenever he wakes up from all his napping he seems to think it’s time for food. He’ll stand by the feeding area until I get something for him.

What I gove him is a full can of wet food daily....spliting it up over the day and night....in thirds...sometimes quarters. And i leave dry food for him too...but he has no teeth so he doesn’t eat alot of that. Maybe 1/4 daily.

He’s ten pounds....and fixed as well. I wonder if I’m not feeding him enough? But he’s sure putting on weight!

We give our cat (4 years old, 8 to 9 pounds)premium dry food about 3 to 4 inches up on a plastic kid’s cup. (3/4 cup??) That lasts her all day. Rationed out over time, with a few ounces put down in the dish only when she isn’t begging for it. Talk to a vet to see what weight and food is best for yours. Ours was on the heavy side, but has lost some and now is maintaining.

It is tough when they beg for it, but a “shoo” with your foot and a commitment to giving them food on your schedule they figure it out.

I give my cats a tablespoon of wet twice a day. I always have the dry food out. I know the wet is good because it gives then the hydration they need because they do not drink water that much. The wet food also makes them fat. I would cut back on it.

“Crazy cat ladies don't earn that title because of their rational behavior and robust social skills, you know?”

Well, I may be a crazy cat lady. I adopt strays. I have 14 cats. A lot of them are over 13 yrs old. The best I do is make sure they are neutered or spayed and well fed. I, also, take care of any of their emergency medical needs. It does cost money but they are in my care. I still have a momma cat who showed up pregnant with a small kitten in 1997. She gave birth to four several weeks later. I adopted out two and still have two of her kittens. Momma and kitties are getting old but still in good health. I will care for any strays as long as I can handle the brood. So far so good. As far as I look at it, they have a life longer than being abandoned.

Unfortunately this cat has no teeth at all... and so stuggles with the hard food....I even tried to wet it some and then it just slips out of his mouth.

I bought some chicken this last week and he just loves that.....so maybe cutting back the wet food and adding the chicken as a meal might be the way to go.

Just not sure how to go about getting him away from so much wet food ....I’ll ask the vet when I take him for his shots.

Aww poor critter well then if he has no teeth I would give him all the wet food he wanted. I'm taking a cat that showed up on my deck last year to the vet in two weeks. She was dumped she had a collar on when she showed up. She is around 2 and Grey and white very pretty she is hanging in my house and I have given her a flea collar and some flea and tick treatments. She is pissing off my old girl cat Tessio but the other cat Boot loves her. I got stuck with another cat just when I swore no more cats!

My adopted hound would be doing backflips and running under lowhanging branches to get those things off of her. Barring that, she’d just lay down and refuse to move, rolling her eyes at me with that “what, are you nuts?” look on her face.

I understand that people have had success with them, but have never tried it with any of mine.

That storm anxiety is often learned. My last two weren't fazed in the least until a tornado touched down nearby, then they were both terrified of them from then on.

Make a “den” in an interior room or closet that they can go to, with a dog pillow or even an old blanket or two. They won't be able to see the lightning as much, and the thunder won't be as loud away from exterior walls. Best place for them to be if there actually was a tornado, too, unless you have a basement.

Separation anxiety is helped by leaving a radio or television on while you're away. Give them something with your scent on it. Give them a treat and lots of praise and affection when you leave, and repeat it when you return, make a routine. Dogs are very oriented to a routine, it reassures them that you're coming back.

——#4. Getting a Pet to Practice Being Parents

WRONG! In fact, I highly recommend that before any woman marries a man with the intention of having children buy her intended a puppy and watch how he raises it. If the dog is well-trained (however one wishes to define that), then it bodes well for being a good parent, if not then she should plan on being the sole provider of training for the child.——

I can’t disagree more....you are equating raising a dog with raising your own flesh and blood !!!

A puppy is not a infant or baby....as a man I can not describe the feeling of holding my newborn son for the first time...my entire world view changed that day....a new puppy is cute and adorable, but it’s still just a dog to be raised like any decent human being should

I think this country has developed a mental illness....Because of the 50 million aborted babies we have let be murdered

There is no thing as “ pet parent” there is not a single women on the face of the planet that has given birth to a pet dog

We can love them like family members but after it’s all said and done... They are property not our children

Millions of people have replaced their dead children with a pet...

Flame away...

Yes, I know...vet doesn’t know why no teeth....but I didn’t know this until I took him to the vet. But we’ll manage this.

I did cook up chicken for him for “treats”. Felt bad I couldn’t give him those like most cats....he just loved the chicken! Froze it all in little pouches and take out as needed.

I’ll work this out so it’s just right, but he’s surely not going hungry by any means!!!!

I can relate to your Grey cat not getting along with Tessio....I had a orange tiger cat come onto my deck yesturday....”Kitty cat” wasn’t happy about hearing that cat out there! Hissed and had a kissy fit! Ha!

Hard to turn them away but I understand there are quite a few cats that run here in this neighborhood ....

It's the owner's fault for not controlling the animal.

I see women walking pit bulls in my town...when it sees a cat, small dog or a small child; she will NOT be able to 'control' the animal. Pit bulls should NOT be walked around residential neighborhoods...keep them inside or in a secure pen.
