6 Stupid Things Pet Owners Need to Stop Doing Now

Pets are a wonderful thing. No matter how sad or depressing your life may be, it's always just a little bit better knowing you have a loyal pet by your side.

But being a pet owner is a tricky proposition. Something about being able to "own" a living thing seems to drive some people to the point of madness. Crazy cat ladies don't earn that title because of their rational behavior and robust social skills, you know?

“Buying pets without full positive buy-in from the rest of the family.”

And, buying pets for somebody for Christmas or birthday, etc., on that day. Pets should NOT be a “surprise”, and they should not have to suffer neglect on the day they come to the house because everyone’s too busy.

Hate AKC all you want, but I learned that from them 30 years ago as a teen.

I think my parents learned that then too, because instead of bringing home birds for Christmas, they gave me a voucher/promise. I picked out a couple Zebra finches myself later. (We already had the dog - not anywhere near a special day.)

I don’t throw parties for the animals. But I do buy them gifts (toys, treats), when possible.

Slight thread hijack...

I have a Dog who is and inside dog (we don't have a yard) but we walk him everyday and we get him plenty of exercise in the house with running fetch games everyday.

We got him from the pound as a pup and he is a Yellow lab/ shepherd mix. No one is for sure what kind of shepherd but he looks like a small Yellow Lab and is about 16 months Old.

He is extremely smart (he has figured out doorknobs need to turn to open the door but can only manage it once in maybe 20 tries no one showed him this he just started doing it)

The problem is he get very anxious when my wife leaves the House and also during storms. Several people told us the bit with the wife is separation anxiety (she dotes on him like a favorite grandchild) and the loud rumbling noise and lightning cracks mess with a dog's sensitive hearing.

Several people swear by a gadget called a "thunder coat" which wraps around the dog tightly like a sweater. I am very skeptical but the dog really suffers from the above situations.

Do any of you know if such a thing works or is just another of those worthless gizmos pushed on infomercials?

I see a trend here. It seems that people who write lists and call them articles might have too much time on their hands. I rather concur.... ;)

I’ve never thrown a party for my personal dogs (altho heck, why not, the dogs would probably have fun since it would involve people giving them attention and food, their favorite things) but the organizations I’ve belonged to hold what amounts to parties that involve dogs. So what, everyone has a good times and often it involves raising money for rescue etc. Our local golden rescue has a big Expo every year. I go to take photos for them. It’s a huge party. Everyone has a great time and they raise money. I recommend it.

LOts of goldens have thunderstorm anxiety (I’ve owned a couple myself). While I have never tried a Thundercoat personally, I know people (breeders) who swear by them. If I had a dog now with a big thunderstorm problem, I would try it, I think.
Some dogs are just a little anxious and others are a huge problem. My first golden was in the second category. She would destroy things if she was alone, especially if she happened to be outside (back then I sometimes left her out in the yard when we were gone). She once tore the door off of a Varikennel from the inside and also could unweave chain link fencing. Fortunately we lived in a part of the world where thunderstorms were rare.
One thing I would also do is have the dog’s thyroid tested. Sometimes there is a connection. Have the Michigan state panel done.
Anyway, good luck. Oh, most of the dogs I’ve had with the problem were fine if they could just get into a small space (bathtubs are often a favorite place). I’ve only had one that was really really psycho. And strangely, she was an AWESOME hunting dog.

Blaming the owner instead of the pit bull when it rips some innocent person’s head off.

It's the owner's fault for not controlling the animal.

Buying pets without full positive buy-in from the rest of the family.

I could never own a cat because I was always out voted by the Husband and kids. I am the ONLY cat lover in the family.

True story... my SIL sent out “birth announcements” when she got puppies. Yes, birth announcements! Her name was listed under “Mother” and my moron brother’s name under “Father”. Birth date, weight and markings were included. I laughed for months.....

Well congratulations, you are in the running for the stupidest post of the day.

Makes sense coming from a pit-bull hating wuss.

I typically like these threads until a douche bag like you show up.

It's the owner's fault for not controlling the animal.

Or for thinking he could control the animal.

Yes, I blame the owners. Because no one should own a pit bull. It’s too dangerous. My lab has certain instincts. He’s never been hunting but he still insists on retrieving birds if he possibly can. He can bring large item of food in his soft mouth and return it to the foot of his owner.

the pit bull has certain instincts. We all know it. 9 out of ten of them may never do anything and be good dogs, but why take the chance since there are so many other nice breeds.

There is one now in my neighborhood. I don’t like it. I see flickers of annoyance in its snake-like face when Bubba tries to be friendly.

I agree about small dogs needing sweaters in the winter. Boots too if they will wear them. Small dogs very can get cold quickly; boots will help their paws. Ice can be very sharp and cut them and the chemicals used to melt the ice can cause blisters on the paws. As to the hermit crabs, they are as boring as dirt so decorating their houses sounds like a good idea.

LOL!

I wasn’t giving a grammar lesson.

If you thought I was then you are an idiot.
