LOS ANGELES (CBS) The parents of Connor M. Penhall, killed allegedly by a drunk driver, released statements Friday to thank supporters and express their grief over losing their 21-year-old son.
Penhall was the son of former CHiPs actor Bruce Penhall, a World Speedway Champion in 1981 and 82, as well as a legend in motorcycle racing circles.
The younger Penhall was killed Wednesday night while working on a closed portion of the 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park. CHP officers said Tatsuhiko Sakamoto, an alleged drunk driver, plowed through barricades and hit Penhall.
Sakamoto, 37, was charged with gross vehicular manslaughter. Sakamotos car has Hawaii plates but hes believed to be a resident of Arcadia.
Over the past two days, my family and I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous international outpouring of support as a result of the news reporting, Facebook fans, family, friends and the motorsports community at large. Were so grateful to have such support at this very emotional and difficult time, Bruce Penhall said.
One hopes to never have to plan for such a tragic event involving one of your kids. It truly can happen to anyone, said Laurie Penhall, Connors mother.
The younger Penhall was a motorcross champion in his own right, becoming California champion.
A Penhall family spokesperson said the family isnt currently planning a public memorial and asked for privacy while they grieve.
Penhalls parents said Connor was a huge lover of dogs and animals. The family wishes for those seeking to offer support that in lieu of flowers, gifts or food, please consider a donation to Best Friends Animal Society in memory of Connor Penhall at www.bestfriends.org.
Penhall, a resident of Corona, is survived by his parents and three siblings, Devin, Ryan and McKenzie Penhall.
Damn. His family must be going through hell.
RIP.
Prayers and best thoughts for Mr. Penhall. I cannot imagine his pain right now.
did he drive all the way from Hawaii??
Who is he? I thought only the main characters could be the “star” of a show, not the down ballot people.
Not that it matters I guess.
Prayers for the family.
Thoughts & prayers to the Penhall family..
So strange, I was driving today & noticed the truck next to me was a Penhall Company truck..haven’t seen one forever & immediately thought of Bruce Penhall because back in the day, his poster was one of several on my wall..along with Scott Baio & Shaun Cassidy. Can’t believe I just outed myself with age & Tiger Beat! ha..
Anyway, just strange that I was thinking of that today..& if memory serves me right, Bruce’s parents tragically died in a plane crash years ago.
So sad...
I met Bruce once back in the 80s when he personally showed up on a job we had where we had hired the Penhall Company. I joked with him about his no longer working in Hollywood and he joked back and said his wife spent more money than he could make there. He seemed like a real nice guy. I’ve seem him race many times back in the day at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Sad to hear of this event.
