A Hammond, Indiana, family is reeling.
First, their home was destroyed by fire. They did not have insurance. Then an apparent misunderstanding led to a police officer shooting the family dog.
On April 15, the McCullough family lost their home in a fire, leaving them homeless. They have been staying elsewhere but would return to their home to feed their dog "Angel" and the 11 puppies she gave birth to last week. Wednesday morning, the family was in their home when Hammond Police arrived.
Louis McCullough said police were screaming so Angel started to bark. "She ran toward (the officer)," McCullough said. McCullough said he told the dog to stop. "She stopped to turn and look at me and he shot her in the back."
Hammond Police Chief Brian Miller says the police went to the home after a complaint about prowlers.
"Regrettably, one of our police officers did shoot their dog," said Miller. "The dog got out from a corner and came towards him, and he says the dog lunged at him, and he blocked the dog with his knee, and he fired one shot."
"(The officer) was screaming and cursing at us from the time we interacted," said Chanel McCullough. "He didn't even give us a chance to explain."
Miller said his department will look into the family's allegations of unfair treatment.
The McCulloughs say Angel was an important part of the family. She had been with them since she was a puppy. The dog did not die instantly but later at a vet's office.
Telling their four children has been very difficult for the McCulloughs.

What happens to the 11 newborn puppies? Maybe they should be delivered to the PD in a basket with 11 bottles and the cops can hand feed them for 6 weeks.
Look into what?
They'll take 9 months to perform an investigation, and release their finding 4 months later, all while hoping the stupid tax payer victims just go away.
And law enforcement wonder why so many now see cops as overpaid agents of a corrupt government.
They don’t insure their house, and they don’t get their dog fixed. Hard to tell from the picture if it is a pit bull.
“baby pit bulls”
Appears that it is. Three strikes. Good shoot.
“(The officer) was screaming and cursing at us from the time we interacted,” said Chanel McCullough. “He didn’t even give us a chance to explain.”
Not everyone that wears a badge is worthy to be an officer. It’s high time the police start policing their own ranks.
If they don't, community organizers like Al Sharpton will do it through show trials and racial harassment and his Klan with a tan will unleash the haters to murder cops. The reform they demand will be designed to protect real dangerous criminals and put officers in serious danger.
Either officers start acting like Americans who care about life, the bill of rights and real innocence and guilt or the diversity racists will start acting like the Cartel's Mexicans.
He missed the puppies.
Police seem to be the only employees that can curse at the public and keep their jobs. They need to act mature and respectable.
Some things took me aback, so before I offer condolences, I must make observational questions:
-no home insurance?
-had to move from the house, but dog still lives there?
-dog has puppies?
-dogs are pit-bull terriers?
This doesn’t paint much better picture than updated revelations about Trayvon did for him.
Point conceded.
Those are invisible faux puppies ~ from another kind of animal with a similar name or something.
The dog got shot in the back because he walks around on all fours. Now if he'd been smart he'd gotten up and walked around like the cop and taken away his gun and registered it with somebody.
This is all confused and the house was gutted ~ but that hero dog lady found a plastic laundry basket to raise the puppies 'cause wif'out them their income is going to go through the bottom of the floor!
Nope, they ain't breedin' no dogs. Hunh, unh! NO!
-Hasn’t gotten dogs vaccinated?
-breeding without licenses? (not that I particularly care about that, but if that’s the rule, you know who generally ignores it)
More observations that sour the view of the “victim”.
I'm pretty sure any good dog breeder would tell you that owning a dog that had puppies doesn't make you a dog breeder.
Cops - utterly useless in 99% of cases. NEVER around when they’re “needed”, ALWAYS there when they can write a “rolling stop” or 3 MPH over the speed limit citation to a regular joe driving 100% sober trying to get to work. NEVER there to cite illegals for ANYTHING. If this cretin shot MY dog, I’d have gut shot him, shot out his kneecaps and made sure he died in the slowest, most painful way possible. Donut-munching, authority-tripping, testicular fortitude lacking SCUM. And, to top it all off, UNION scum (that was redundant).
