House overturns school bake sale ban
Boston Herald ^ | 5/9/12 | Chris Cassidy

State lawmakers overturned a controversial ban on school bake sales this afternoon after a fierce public outcry over school nutrition guidelines that also prohibited pizza, white bread and 2 percent milk.

“That is the stupidest thing I’ve seen in my career,” state Rep. Cory Atkins (D-Concord), moments after the House unanimously voted to ease the statewide cupcake crackdown. “Talk about hitting the nerve of government reaching far into people’s lives.”

State Rep. Brad Hill (R-Ipswich) offered the amendment, which leaves it up to local school committees whether to adopt the Department of Public Health rules, after hearing about an Ipswich school arts group that would have had to cancel bake-sale field trip fundraisers and fielding complaints from the local football Boosters concerned about their concession stands.

“I was outraged,” said Hill. “This is not what government was set up to do. Then when I started hearing from the groups and how this would affect different fundraising activities, it upset me even more.”

The Herald first broke the story about the new school nutritional requirements, which go into effect in August. Since then, the news has fueled a nationwide debate about the role schools should play in battling childhood obesity, which supporters have said is an epidemic threatening to shorten the lives of the country’s youngest generation.

CNN’s Anderson Cooper mocked the rules on his primetime show earlier this week.

The ban passed as an amendment to the House’s supplemental budget. It still has to pass the Senate and be signed by Gov. Deval Patrick.

Anderson Cooper? Someone is actually watching Anderson Cooper?

That is astounding.

Nearly as astounding as the bake sale proposal. What a bunch of meatheads. But then, this is the Bay State.

Ever see that liberal bumper sticker, “It will be a great day when we have all the money we need for schools and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber?”

Now they want to disallow the _bake sale_ too!

They will just wait awhile and then pass the law again in smaller pieces.

After yesterday’s shellacking in the voting booths across the US, everyone but Soetoro got the message.

You’re right. In the old days even 1st graders had some kind of PE. In grade school they would let us check out various balls and we would hard for some time. I bet we smelled like little dogs when we got back to class, LOL.

the statewide cupcake crackdown

lol, this will be all over the talk show, comedy circuit.

I'm a firm believer that excess sugar = early death, however it's up to people to learn this and adjust.

They did with tabacco and drunk driving and seatbelt usage.

It's not up to govenment to intervene. I hope Romney agrees.

Indeed I have seen the sticker on cars, and agree with you. I only had to enter in terms like "bake sale bomber bumper sticker" to yahoo to find a pic of it.

Yeesh.

I don't think it was ever a law in the first place, but a rule promulgated by some state agency, that was intended to be mandatory. These guys are now passing a law, which supersedes an agency regulation, to make those same guidelines voluntary on the part of individual school districts.

It would have cost them votes, they didn’t have a change of heart.

You watch they’ll come up with a tax on the fundraisers instead.
