2weeks rations equals 1days smokes

Posted on 05/10/2012 8:48:47 PM PDT by mamelukesabre

They had a sale on elbow pasta, aka macaroni. 75cents/lb...so I ran to the store with a pocket full of quarters and bought 8 pounds worth. I figure if I only ate macaroni it would last me 2 weeks. I might go back tomorrow and buy another 16 pounds of it. Or more.

In front of me at the checkout was a guy counting out nickels dimes and pennies for a pack of smokes. About 6 bucks...about the same amount I spent.

I couldn't help but notice the irony. Here it is the day before payday and he's down nearly to his last penny(literally) and he's spending it on one days worth of smokes. I've still got lots of quarters to spare(too much to carry in fact), and haven't even started using the smaller coins, and I choose to stock up on 2 weeks worth of rations.

I am soooo glad I don't smoke...or drink soda pop. One weeks worth of smokes and soda pop costs more than I spend on food and dogfood in a month.

I haven’t had a cigarette since Sunday. And I don’t drink soda.

It ain’t about the money, I just want something more than I want cigarettes, I want to be able to breathe again, wake up in the morning without hacking up a quart of lung funk, and ride my bicycles again.

Sorry, you hit a nerve and I felt like making a remark about smoking.

Carry on, don’t smoke ‘em if you got ‘em ;)

Addiction is a powerful monkey to have on your back. I wish him well and the strength to walk tall.

I do smoke, but I buy loose tobacco, and in bulk from a provider I know in NC. I've been dealing with that farm for over 15 years. I pay about $16/month for smokes.

It has gone up a lot since FedGov increased the taxes on loose tobacco. I used to pay about $5/month.

I am back to growing my own this year.

What's killing me at the grocery store is the price of fresh veg. I can't wait for my garden to produce something more than asparagus and herbs.

What do you bet he sells them for 50 or 75 cents each to desperate smokers who can’t afford a pack? He’ll do alright.

I also started another batch of beer tonight. Much cheaper than the canned crap they sell.

BTW.
Most all of the cost of tobacco is TAX, and stand because Obamas gonna tax your precious carb laden pasta if he has his way.

You can roll your own with eggs, flour and salt

Good for you!!!...I have never smoked, but my husband quit overnight when his lung collapsed. Had nothing to do with smoking, it was something he was born with (blisters on his lung and when they pop, they leave a hole-and your lung deflates).

But he was thinking about having a cig and once they explained that the smoke would be coming out of the holes in his side where the tubing went to his lung, that was what did it.

He laughed and then just said “damn”...that was 3 years ago.

So I wish you luck my friend; we all have something that we need to change (mine is exercise and eating better-middle age weight is killing me) and it ain’t easy...

“Addiction is a powerful monkey to have on your back.”

I was thinking “1-days smokes”? Heck - a pack might have made it to lunch for me back in the day. 3 packs a day, Camel straights. And a half-tin of Copenhagen.

And I thought it was expensive then! I still miss it though.

If/when TSHTF....the guy with the smokes will do better than the guy with the macaroni...for bartering purposes....so won’t the guy, who has a stash of bourbon. :)

People don’t even care about the yoke they place on their fellow citizens.

They applaud it. “well that’s not my thing, so I don’t care!”

They don’t realize the Goobermint is coming for “Their thing” next.

Ecigs are the way to go.

Don't go for the cigarette-style junk like Blu. Get an Ego, or similar.

I quit smoking cigarettes two months ago with my Ego-C and now I don't feed the government beast near as much tax money.

I’m a smoker, been one since I was 13 or 14. I’ve been on and off ‘em for my whole life. Both my parents were smokers.

I love Marlboro Reds, but I have also spent nearly a decade off ‘em. I only started again (excuse mode ON) when I got laid off in 2009. Too much unsupervised time on my hands, started sucking cigs again.

That is one of the worst habits there is and one of the hardest to quit. You are never an ex smoker, you are just a smoker who is not smoking, like being a drunk who is not drinking. They say smoking is harder to quit than heroin.

I want to get back in shape and ride my bikes again. I won’t ride if I am on the cigs, I’d rather sit here and smoke another pack of Marlboros. I will always be a smoker, but I am off ‘em again and I have the rest of the year to try to recover my lungs.

The only way I’ve ever been able to get clean is to have something I want more than the cigarettes, go cold turkey. Right now, I’m thinking riding my mountain bike at 12,000 feet again someday is a worthy goal. Colorado 2013, yeah!
