Algonquin Hotel cat Matilda returns after renovations
NY Post ^ | 5/25/12 | REBECCA ROSENBERG and DON KAPLAN

She’s one perk no other hotel can match.

Matilda III, the 4-year-old pussycat who lives in the lobby of the tony Algonquin, returned yesterday as the hotel reopened after a five-month, $18 million renovation.

She was quickly outfitted with a vibrating collar to keep her away from the kitchen — and then entertained the 25 guests who checked in.

“She has to go back to work,” said Algonquin executive assistant Alice de Almeida, Matilda’s official keeper.

“She has to earn her tuna.”

Matilda is the 10th feline to call the 181-room hotel home since 1932; all females bear her name, and all males are called Hamlet.

This cat is the worst bellboy I ever saw. I asked her to take my bags up to my room and three hours later, still no bags. I went back down to the lobby, and there she was laying around waiting for people to pet her. Some lady asked me what breed the cat was. I told her, “I’m not sure, but she sleeps around in hotels so she might be a Kardashian.”

Thanks SupplySider. Pelham is right, we can’t be scared, we must be angry and just throw these bums out.

Thank you. She knows it. Toby is gorgeous! Are his eyes blue? In the picture they look almost orangey-yellow.

HIs eyes are a beautiful blue. The color in the pictures is due to my poor picture taking skills! LOL

Absolutely beautiful!

speaking of "fuzzy things".....anyone know how to keep their fur from getting so many knots? Toby's fur is ok execpt for his tummy, which keeps getting knots where he licks. Brushing isn't a big help so I have to cut them out.

Love the personality, but the shedding and knots drive me crazy!

Oh my! That cat looks a good amount like our Gracie. Gracie just turned 7, her mom was a full-blooded Siamese, but we don’t know what breed her dad was. Gracie’s marked a bit different from Matilda, but the fuzzy appearance and bearing remind me of our cat. BTW, Gracie is a heck of a hunter. She’s an indoor/outdoor cat, and leaves us ‘presents’ all the time outside the back door.

Thanks!

Honestly, Paws has the problem with her neck ruff rather than tummy fur. We always chalked it up to the exact opposite; being a place she couldn’t reach at all to groom on her own.

Our other longhair kitty has a different fur texture. and mats up anywhere and everywhere. Most commonly ruff and flanks where fur is thickest and longest, tho.

We haven’t figured out much more than brushing and trimming as needed. We’ve discussed a lion cut for the other kitty since she mats considerably worse, but it would be major trouble to maintain, so...
