Shes one perk no other hotel can match.
Matilda III, the 4-year-old pussycat who lives in the lobby of the tony Algonquin, returned yesterday as the hotel reopened after a five-month, $18 million renovation.
She was quickly outfitted with a vibrating collar to keep her away from the kitchen and then entertained the 25 guests who checked in.
She has to go back to work, said Algonquin executive assistant Alice de Almeida, Matildas official keeper.
She has to earn her tuna.
Matilda is the 10th feline to call the 181-room hotel home since 1932; all females bear her name, and all males are called Hamlet.

I liked this part
“She greeted her fans, including Tim Houghton, 50, a guest visiting from Washington who sought out the cat as soon as he arrived.
She responded with dignity, he said. She was resigned to my advances. It definitely made the experience.
That Mr. Houghton truly understands cats.
But the real story here is that we cannot, we just cannot, let the government ruin our lives, our lives as free people, who love cats, or don’t or whatever.
I’d think even the stinkin’ libs would start to get this part right about now.
We can’t have a system where the gov’t says: you can’t have a cat roaming your hotel, you can’t have a lemonade stand, you can’t have a bake sale for your school, your church; you can’t eat the lunch your mom made you.
Even if your mom gives you Fritos and a soda for lunch, you’ll survive if you eat that.
I’m not sure our society will survive if mom doesn’t get to pack your lunch.
OK, sorry, got off on a rant there. But....I’m scared.

The only time I have visited the Algonquin Hotel I saw a mouse. So I suspect that they are getting some good publicity for this cat when there is a genuine need for its presence.

I stayed at the Algonquin Hotel for two weeks back in 1981. For a Southerner with country roots it was an experience.

There was a plumbing pipe a few feet from the ceiling in my room. Not the best ambiance.

Thanks for posting. I had thought the ousting of the Algonquin cat was permanent. They practically ruined that great old establishment but it’s nice to know the cat is back. And the kitty litter (I hope) is still stashed behind one of the lobby’s easy chairs.

What a gorgeous Ragdoll!
I have a Ragdoll at home and he is the sweetest kitty I've ever had the pleasure of being owned by....
