Construction crew saves kittens beneath concrete

SANDY — A mysterious sound, a dreadful realization, and a miraculous rescue. A cat was trapped in one of the most unlikely places imaginable, and somehow made it out alive.

Meet Crete. As in, concrete. He's named that because his owner rescued him from inside of a garage floor. Builders were working on a new home in West Jordan when they thought they heard meowing.

"The sheetrockers said they kept hearing the cat," said contractor David Best. "So they started tearing apart the walls and cutting holes in things looking for this cat."

The workers made their way around the home, cutting holes in numerous rooms trying to find the animal.

"I thought maybe it had climbed up in there and slid down and got stuck," said contractor Russell Evans. "So I just cut it out and I'm like tearing it out, and I'm like, 'Where is the cat?'"

"These guys would call, 'Hey kitty, kitty, kitty,' and it would meow, and I thought, 'Wow, it's in the middle,' and we've got our ears to the ground and everything," Best said.

The bizarre reality finally set in.

"I call Rich, and I'm like, 'I can hear the cat. It's in the concrete, I know it,'" Evans said.

I read a similar story that didn't turn out as well. I'm glad they made finding Kitty a priority.

My two wait and lurk as I clean the litter box. They race to see who will be the first to use it. If I’m feeling generous, I’ll clean it again for the loser so they both get to be “the first”......yeah, I have no life *sigh*

The basic distinction between the west and any other group is our care foe animals.

If Africa, Asia, or South America "ruled" the world. Extinction would multiply ten fold within 10 years.

And that wouldn't be just animals!

I hope so too. But if not, I’ll bet he has the spirit to handle it. Remember Oskar?

That’s what he gets for leaving me in the house alone.

Just can't stop laughing over that. ;o) That'll show him! (Still hoping for the best on your pet...)

Good luck. I’m a big supporter of programs that spay/neuter feral cats. There is an active group here that is greatly appreciated.

I have a personal story about a cat getting in duct work. I had just adopted a new kitty, and I had read that the proper way to introduce a new cat to a resident cat is to keep them for a while. Well, I put my new cat in my bathroom and went out for the night. When I got home that night, I go into the bathroom to check on her and she is nowhere to be found. I look at the vent in the floor and the vent cover had been taken off. Somehow this cat had gotten the cover off of the vent and crawled down into the duct work under the house. Well, it was the middle of winter when this happened and so we had to turn off the heat until she decided to come back out, because I didn’t want her crawling down close to the furnace and getting fried. This happened on a Saturday night and I didn’t get her back out until the following Monday night.
