Extreme exercise such as marathons may permanently damage the heart and trigger rhythm abnormalities, warn researchers. They say the safe upper limit for heart health is a maximum of an hour a day - after which there is little benefit to the individual. A review of research evidence by US physicians says intensive training schedules and extreme endurance competitions can cause long-term harm to peoples hearts.

people can take all the drugs they want to get a high but there is none better than a long run and a good solid workout...makes you feel alive...(as I sit here typing) :)

All throughout my 20s I had extremely strenuous jobs(unloading and loading semi trailers in 130 degree heat and also various other hard labor) IN ADDITION to being addicted to: long distance running, cycling, boxing, weightlifting, waterskiing. THere were some days when I did all of the above in a single day. I ate minimum 5000 calories per day and sweat profusely non stop no matter how cold it was or if I was inside in the air conditioning. I even sweat in my sleep and I slept on the floor in the basement every night because of this.
Except for a very small portion of humanity for a very brief period of time, it’s been “hard work all day every day” just trying to survive.
Good for you (heart and health wise) ..do you still do any cardio such as bicycling etc?
I'm in my mid 20's and run 3-4 days per week but try not to overdo it..I also bicycle and do cardio on machines but it just ain't the same s a good long run...yes, that runners high.

Sounds about right. I do one sit-up a month when I get out of the beautician’s chair after she washes my hair.

Any meaningful medical study would be far outside the range of any journalist to understand. They can’t even grasp the most basic statistical concepts dealing with subjects far less complex than human physiology.

Same thing happened to a marathon running friend of mine.
A friend of mine discovered jogging in mid-life and for years ran cross-country. I warned him not to over-do it. Sure enough, he had a heart attack, but thankfully recovered. He still runs hard and I still warn him to slow down.
