Philadelphia is the most bed bug infested city in the U.S. according to a new report, knocking New York City's two-year reign at the top. The 'City of Brotherly Love' jumped four places to number one this year according to the annual ranking by pest control company Terminix, reporting the highest service calls and confirmed cases in the country. New York has fallen to third place with Cincinnati keeping its second place title for the second year going.

"...ah chit, now ya did it, I'll be scrratchin all day"
Bedbugs have been a growing problem in a lot of cities over the last few years. Here in Toronto it started to become serious within a year of Council enacting a ban on pesticide use. Last year I lived in a place that had an infestation (it was a room with shared facilities). Within a week of moving out I treated everything I had (using illegal bug spray) and haven’t seen one since.
A friend of mine does pest control. He showed me the web-site, where he buys supplies. Next to most chemicals, there is a long list of states (mostly in the northeast) that the company cannot ship that chemical to.
We are regulating ourselves into poorer health - pesticides that don’t kill bugs, detergents that don’t clean, etc. Totally stupid.
BTW, my friend is getting out of the business. He does $5k a year in business (its something he does in his spare time)....and he has been given a $900 fine for filing his taxes 15 days late (apparently its April 1 for business taxes)...and he keeps having various agents come and inspect his chemicals, chemical storage, and records.
They are very tiny. We responded to a man who was bedridden and living in squaller. The man was covered in red splotches and sores and was having some type of allergic reaction. When we pulled him out of his bed we could see a multitude of insect life scurrying for shelter. The bed bugs are small enough that they are difficult to see, but the bugs who eat the tasty blood filled bed bugs are larger.
We were all feeling itchy on the way back to the station just thinking about those nasty little bugs. We felt sorry for the ambulance crew who took the man and who knows how many little hitch hikers along with him. This is why DDT was considered such a miracle when it was discovered. Compared with the insecticides we use today it is safe, so persons, their clothing, bedding and abode who were infected could simply by dusted and bingo the problem would go away.
Simple solution. Empty the hotel and send in a robot to irradiate all the rooms.
