Is this the 'iPad killer' at last? Microsoft unveils new Surface tablet..

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has an uphill battle on his hands. He needs to break into the tablet market, taking on both the iconic market-leader, the iPad, as well as as an ever-burgeoning range of svelte Android tablets. However, after Microsoft's repeated attempts over 30 years to break into the tablet market, it now seems the software giant has the right tools to make it right. The Microsoft Surface tablet was officially unveiled in Los Angeles last night, and from the favourable first impressions, it looks like we have a three-way race in the tablet market. The Surface comes with a 10.6" screen, a clever magnetic cover which doubles as a keyboard, and a kickstand to hold it upright on a table. In a huge paradigm shift for Microsoft, the traditional Windows Desktop has been scrapped for Microsoft's new 'Metro' tile-based theme.

Lose Metro and it isn’t that different from Win 7. It does seem lighter weight though. Ran ok on a VBox on a HP laptop. That says a bunch right there.

I don’t think anyone doubts that Win8 is going to be a significant change over Win7. That’s not the question. The real issue is whether or not that change will be a good thing for the end user.

For the hobbyist who wants the latest and greatest.. probably a good thing without question. For the corporate environment who sees “major change” and reads it as “costly training”, maybe not so much. For the average home user, somewhere inbetween.

Of course, having observed tech punditry for the last couple of decades, the safest prediction I can make is that most of the pundits are probably wrong, and that we won’t have any good idea what will happen (in terms of success/failure as measure by actual end users) until it actually happens.

By perfectly you mean...

... taking ten hours to install a new network.

... not being able to print because the drivers are not updated.

... having to run virus scanners that suck down the system capability.

then, yes, it will probably fit right into the windows constellations of stinkers.

So in response, all I can say is:

zune, zune, zune, zuuuuune. zune, zune, zune, zuuuuuune.
zune, zune, zune, zuuuuune. zune, zune, zune, zuuuuuune.
zune, zune, zune, zuuuuune. zune, zune, zune, zuuuuuune.
zune, zune, zune, zuuuuune. zune, zune, zune, zuuuuuune.

Majority of these people writing these articles, are the same ones who complain -— I can’t get my mail, I can’t get my mail, my IPod don’t work, my IPhone don’t work, I can’t do this my Windows Mobile don’t work and goes and goes.

This is Business we are talking about, people relax will you.

Does any of you know what SDN is and CISCO is little nervous?

Guys, relax, it is just game money game. Look, you will like device you like, and what makes you happy that is all it matters as costumers.

Merci.

Zune was a perfectly fine piece of hardware that came too late.

10 hours to set up a network? What? How? It took me exactly 15 minutes to connect my two pc’s, tv, printer and xbox 360..and 10 minutes of that was just wiring.

Drivers aren’t MS’s fault, that’s entirely on the vendor.

My computer loses very few cycles using MC defender.

In response to Zune once more..I say..XBox..XBox..XBox..they went from being a nobody in the console space to being the second largest console maker after Nintendo.

They won’t always hit a homerun, but this has a lot of possibilities.

Most locations don’t have 4G, so why would you buy it?

I upgraded to a 4G air card, but only cause they cut my rate $10 to do so. There still are very few places where it runs ‘4G’.

4G runs at my house and in our entire region actually. That is why I would buy it.

never had issues networking computers.

zune was a stupid indefensible idea from day one.

anyone who does not have virus scanners is naive.

We are talking about work. Seamlessly with MS office which dominates the real world.
