The Conlon Cobb is the greatest baseball photo of all-time, and was a completely lucky shot.

Interesting "doctored before PhotoShop" photos there. There's a great story behind the one with the three players from the 1960 U.S. Olympic hockey team, and I'm kind of surprised the caption says it's uncertain why those three were edited.

The story behind the photo was that three players (Mayasich and the two Cleary brothers) were added to the U.S. team after the photo had been taken, and their faces were pasted on the bodies of the players they replaced. One of the players who was unceremoniously edited out of existence in this manner was Herb Brooks, who later coached Team USA to the Olympic gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid.

While this image is not nearly so famous, it's one of my all-time favorites. Original caption:Mickey Mantle, the big gun of the New York Yankees, is getting some jubilation out of his system by batting snowballs at Yankee Stadium. Mickey's jubilation came form signing his 1957 contract with the Yankees for approximately $60,000. I believe, the story goes, that Whitey Ford was pitching *The Mick* the snowballs.

Date Photographed: February 04, 1957

Photographer: Frank Jurkoski

I happened to see that while visiting the home of Neil Sakow. I believe he has one of the largest collections of Mantle memorabilia ever. He authored: “The Most Mickeys on My Mantle”. He owns many rare items and when I saw that image on his wall, it stopped me dead in my tracks. Mostly b/c it was a moment that few were privy to.
