Roll-your-own cigarette stores going up in smoke
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | July 4, 2012 | Emily Morris

For smokers who bargained on roll-your-own cigarette stores for cheap smokes, it looks like those days are numbered.

On Friday, President Barack Obama is expected to sign into law a federal highway bill with a section that redefines tobacco manufacturers to include any business with a roll-your-own cigarette machine and taxes those products at the same rate as packaged smokes.

The move comes a month after Illinois increased taxes on such roll-your-own machine-made cigarettes.

Marcia Smith, 47, of Lake County, decided after the state tax increase that she should move her Smokes & Such tobacco shops in Skokie and Gurnee to Wisconsin, where taxes on rolled cigarettes are lower.

If Obama signs the law, she said she’ll shut her doors.

The machines, which cost about $33,000 each, allow customers to pick their own tobacco and pour it into a device that can roll the tobacco into a carton, or about 200 cigarettes, within minutes.

I got busted yesterday for a traffic stop.
Yeah I rolled stop sign on a smoke break that I put on extra hour a day on the clock to cover.

So I head out for a 5 min smoke break off of the company property on my own time and I rolled a stop sign trying to get back in 5 min.

Next thing I know I have the highway patrol and the company security on my ass.

All I wanted was a ciggy on my OWN TIME off in the woods.
Now I’m a Criminale

They started tobbcoco tax to cover smokers health costs, now its Childrens Health Costs.

Allegedly, the huge lawsuit was for the added costs of health care for smokers, too. Did so much as a dime of any of that money ever go to pay a smoker's doctor bills?

But now, under Obambicare, you not only get to pick up the tab for smoker's lungs, but HIV, AIDS, HepC, alcohol rehab, drug rehab, and other serologically transferred and/or "lifestyle" diseases.

Ain't Socialism grand?

In the meantime, they'll keep raking in the other 'taxes', too.

Smokers reaped not a nickle of the tax.

We just got dumped on.

It’s all divide and conquer and it’s all BS.

Precisely. Note, you don't have to smoke, the bar on tobacco was moved to include smokeless tobacco as well. Even though it is easier on the lungs...

You get to pay extra as a "tobacco user" for everything from car insurance to health and life insurance, even homeowner's insurance, even if you don't smoke.

Nothing fair about it. There was a two pronged push to get everyone to pick up the medical bills for AIDS, the gay "marriage" thing (which confers benefits of one 'spouse' upon the other, such as insurance from an employer), and Obamacare, which will penalize us 'breeders' for the ills of perverts.

Either way, straight folks get to pay for the ravages of 'lifestyles' not their own. That doesn't even touch on operations surgically converting the confused to a cheap imitation of a different gender.

And then there is picking up the tab for the murder of the unborn...

You got busted? For rolling a stop sign? They must be desperate for money, where you live!

They are the same way up here, in AZ. There is a mile stretch of road near me with 25 mph limit. They are picking up drivers doing 28.

have extorted UPS to have them report shipments from tobacco sellers to any address in the state. The state will then send you a tax bill for the products you bought.

I quit smoking 4 years ago but prior to that I, as an Illinois resident. was buying my cigarettes in Missouri, at the time they were $14 per carton cheaper than Illinois. I went in "Boom Land" in Benton, Missouri and bought 10 cartons, I presented the clerk with my Visa Debit card and he gave me a friendly warning that maybe I shouldn't do that, he told me that Visa debit and Visa credit had started reporting out of state purchases to the states of buyers. I paid cash instead.

It's best to use cash whenever you're trying to avoid these onerous taxes.

Several years ago, Illinois I.R.S. sent me a form to fill out voluntarily, listing all my out of state tobacco and liquor purchases. I filed it in the round file and they haven't sent me another one since. No doubt, some liberal in state government thought that might be a good idea, when they got zero returns for their efforts, they must have dumped that program.

Not to mention the previous GOP Presidents.

99.999% of Democrats are horrid and at least 75% of Republicans are.

Sadly, this country is finished.

There are mail services in certain states...you can pay for and get a physical mailing address in that state. You can buy whatever online, and have it shipped to that address, and then the service will forward it to you without reporting it to your state.

If you are buying enough stuff online, it would justify the cost of the service.
