A Phoenix woman was arrested and charged with child abuse after police said she put beer into her 2-year-old son's sippy cup at a pizza restaurant.
Valerie M. Topete, 36, is facing one count of child abuse after a witness called police and told them she saw Topete pour beer from a pitcher into the infant's cup and place it in front of the child on Tuesday in the 4900 block of East Ray Road.
The witness told police the child later fell from his seat, leading her to believe the boy was intoxicated.
Topete told police her son had been grasping for the pitcher and that she had put a "splash of beer" into her son's cup that contained apple juice, according to police. She told them it was "reverse psychology" to stop him from grabbing at the pitcher. The mother initially told officers the child did not drink from the cup, but later said the child may have drank the beer.
Officers said the cup had about 4 ounces of liquid with foam on the surface and a distinct odor of alcohol.
The boy was taken to Chandler Hospital as a precaution.
Child Protective Service was called to the hospital. Police said the father of the child, and the boy's two siblings, ages 4 and 8, who had also been at the restaurant, arrived at the hospital and the children were turned over to him.

Child abuse?
Stupid as all heck but arrested for child abuse? That is as in potentially “lose your kids and go to jail” kind of child abuse?
And took the kid to the hospital as a precaution? Over 4 OUNCES of BEER?
Have we gone insane?
How much did the taxpayers invest in this circus before it was over? I’m sure it made great media, and a family is now destroyed over it.
We...ALL...need more guns.................and ammo.
There is a side of our current culture that is despicable. Cops and firefighters see that side of life all of the time, and I thank each and every one of them for their service, and for endeavoring to keep us safe, and “those” people off of the streets.
God love each and every one of them, and I pray for their safety and for their success.

Bad grammar. It should say “the child may have drunk the beer.” And this story was written by TWO journalists with bad grammar. You would think that one of them would have known the correct use.
Fortunately, I grew up in a saner time, otherwise my parents would have been thrown in jail, and I would have gone to a foster home.
As an aside, I recall a friend giving a bottle cap with a tiny bit of beer in it to a very small kitten. The kitten tasted it and jumped straight up in the air about a foot.
Why can’t people mind their own business.
I was about that age when I first tasted beer. I thought it was horrible and wondered why people drank it. A few years later I found out I liked it.
Way back when I lived in a shack in the woods we’d have cookouts, families with small children, music and a keg of beer. One day we noticed several kids passing around a headless doll. Someone saw a kid filling the doll with beer from the keg.
The doll disappeared and we started guarding the keg.

When i was a baby, born early and underweight, the pediatrician told my mother to give me beer. But that was during the late Boomer Years before people became PC!
Same here... and he was a combat pilot from the Second World War, an accomplished lawyer and had more common sense than these idiots out there today.

I’ve always thought overly strict alcohol laws lead to more substance abuse than might otherwise be the case.
I spent a year in France as an exchange student, and was impressed by their alcohol laws: Beer and wine legal at 16, hard liquor at 18. And the French teenagers who’d had experience with American teenagers all commented that they didn’t understand why American teenagers always wanted to drink and get drunk.
I should look up to see if anyone has done studies comparing drinking—alcoholism rates—in countries where alcohol is made into a forbidden fruit (like the US), versus where the attitude is more relaxed. Although it would be hard to control for all the cultural differences...
