So says the guy probably worth somewhere around a gajillion dollars and who likely made somewhere around a thousand times more money from "Avengers" than anyone on the crew.
But Whedon's obviously talking about socialism for, you know, other people:
We are watching capitalism destroy itself right now, [Whedon] told the audience.
He added that America is turning into Tsarist Russia and that were creating a country of serfs.
Whedon was raised on the Upper Westside neighborhood of Manhattan in the 1970s, an area associated with left-leaning intellectuals. He said he was raised by people who thought socialism was a ''beautiful concept."
Socialism remains a taboo word in American politics, as Republicans congressmen raise the specter of the Cold War. They refer to many Obama administration initatives as socialist, and the same goes for most laws that advocate increasing spending on social welfare programs. They also refer to the President as a socialist, though this and many of their other claims misuse the term.
This evidently frustrates Whedon, who traces this development to Ronald Reagan[.]
We have people trying to create structures and preserve the structures that will help the middle and working class, and people calling them socialists, Whedon said. Its not Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal [ ] its some people with some sense of dignity and people who have gone off the reservation.
Great idea. Let's start with Hollywood!

A good example for why I never go see movies anymore. I’ll just download them illegally and chance getting thrown in jail instead. :D
“In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the kind of grinding poverty liberals talk about...the only cases in recorded history, is where they’ve had Capitalism and free trade market government systems. If you want to know where the masses have been worst off, they are exactly the kinds of societies that depart from that. Recorded history has been crystal clear that there is no alternative way so far discovered at improving our way of life that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by free trade enterprise markets.”......Milton Friedman
Hillaire Belloc and GK Chesterton made the point (100 years ago) that socialism was tyranny and was not a moral system, and not a solution to the world's problems. Likewise, they made the point that capitalism would tend inevitably to something that called the Servile State, which we would probably call fascism.
I look at America today and I see that capitalism here (I don't mean the free market) has resulted in something I recognize as fascism and which I see as very similar to socialism. I think we are serfs and I think it is a result of Big Government colluding with Big Business.
Belloc andf Chesterton argued in favor an economic system based on Christian morality, because they said neither capitalism nor socialism could be depended upon to build a decent society with long-term staying power.
I wonder why.
Maybe because of the National SOCIALIST German Workers Party, or the Union of Soviet SOCIALIST Republics.
You are batting for the same team as the Nazi's you ignorant Putz!
Tax him at 110% and see how he likes socialism.
Azz####.
From the article: “They also refer to the President as a socialist, though this and many of their other claims misuse the term.” How is the term MISUSED when referring to obama?
There is just no end to the self-destructive, hypocritical fools in Hollywood.
Has there ever been an industry that is so completely made up of idiots who have no idea where their own wealth and status comes from?
It’d almost be worth it to see everything collapse from their policy proscriptions and be able to walk up to them when they are destitute and tell them what idiots they are.
But they still wouldn’t get it. They’re just too stupid.
The refrain that Capitalism is broke ignores the irritating reality that men are broke, and their brokenness is reflected in everything they do, including economics and politics. Socialism is broke. Communism is broke. It’s all broke. We could look at the corruption in our electorate, and conclude that Democracy is broke. Of course it is. Democrats have contaminated it. Does that mean we throw it away? Capitalism can be fixed. Democracy can be fixed. Socialism, Communism, all the parasitic garbage the left is pushing can’t be fixed.

Way too many Hollyweird commie ‘RAT libs suffer from wealth guilt. They just don’t want their money being thrown into the government sewer. They want other people’s (Republicans and conservatives) money being used for that. They’ll use their celebrity pulpit tell us about it as often as they can. It’s their way of “helping the poor”.

Very true. You get it! Most are still stuck in the old Left vs Right paradigm.
Maybe Whedon wants to do a remake of “Triumph des Willens”.
I thought "Firefly" had a libertarian slant to it.
Guess I was wrong.

Socialism: a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownership and control of the means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc., in the community as a whole.
I guess you can use "socialist" or "socialism" in a looser, more metaphorical sense as well, but you have to be aware that you're doing so, and a lot of people aren't.
Whedon comes out of a very left-wing environment where some people still believe in public ownership of the means of production, so he's sensitive to the distinctions.
His mother was a teacher at a private school and his father was a writer for the Electric Company (how Joss turned out confirms a lot of things people have long believed about public education and public broadcasting).
