Joe Paterno statue taken down
ESPN ^ | 7/22/2012 | Don Van Natta Jr.

Posted on 07/22/2012 10:59:10 AM PDT by Morgana

The Joe Paterno statue was removed Sunday morning from its pedestal outside Beaver Stadium, and it will be stored in an unnamed "secure location," Penn State president Rodney Erickson announced. Erickson also said the Paterno name will remain on the university's library.

Shortly before dawn in State College, Pa., a work crew installed chain-link fences to barricade access to Porter Road outside Beaver Stadium and covered the fence with a blue tarp.

The work crew then removed the 7-foot, 900-pound bronze statue by forklift and placed it into the lower level of the stadium. Erickson released his highly sensitive decision to the public at 7 a.m. ET Sunday.

Workers lifted the 7-foot-tall statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium as the 100 to 150 students watched, some chanting, "We are Penn State."

The decision came 10 days after a scathing report by former FBI director Louis J. Freeh found that Paterno, with three other top Penn State administrators, had concealed allegations of child sexual abuse made against former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The Freeh report concluded their motive was to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity.

If Sandusky was on Switzer’s coaching staff, and Switzer found out about it, Switzer would have strangled Sandusky with his bare hands.

Rush to judgment?

Judgment has been passed. Sandusky raped the little boys while JoePa just stood by and let him. That came out in the trial by way of testimony for that grad student McQueary.

JoePa is just as guilty for not stopping it.

Wow. Here's this guy who's been almost a "gxd" at Penn State for decades and now all of a sudden everything has reversed completely. Now this "gxd" is having his statue removed.

Gives me hope that we might (at least theoretically) be able to undo the current administration!

Not having known either Switzer or JoePa before all this happened I am so glad to hear that about Switzer. At least one coach out there had morals.

After that VERY public threat by someone who paid for that flying banner behind an airplane flying over the Penn State campus saying they would do something about that statue, it didn't take long for the statue to be quickly removed out of fear someone was going to blow it up or seriously damage it in some way. The tragedy in Aurora, CO a few nights ago may have hastened that decision, in my humble opinion.

Is the Paterno family not entitled to their response to the charges??? Even Sandusky was given his day in court.

In most rushes to judgment, there are other motives involved. While this story has been public for a number of months, it appears there is a motivation to contain any blame for a cover up solely to those at PSU.

As has been questioned here and elsewhere, why is it that coach Sandusky never received any known offers to coach at other universities after his retirement?

I have a hunch that if the truth were fully exposed, there could be hundreds of people from various universities who likely had some knowledge of Sandusky’s actions.

Uncle Chip - thanks for posting ‘the other side of the story.’ I stand with the family. There has been no due process. Very convenient to blame one dead person, who cannot be ‘innocent until proven guilty.’ There are still administrators and powers that be AT Penn State who were part of the cover-up. JP was not the President of Penn State, and he is not the only person involved in this.

Due process. Innocent until proven guilty. I am sorry the statue was taken down.

flame away

He ended the talk by saying “I don’t want to leave college football to the likes of people like Barry Switzer”

Paterno made that remark in 1985.

As the fates would have it, Joe's Penn State team wound up having to play Switzer's Sooners in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship.

I think the Sooners (who won) didn't let Joe forget that remark.

The mindlessness of you two clowns amazes me.

In your Paterno-worshiping world, had you walked into the showers where Sandusky was raping that kid, you would probably have offered that rapist a fresh ‘soap-on-a-rope’ and wished him a good day before leaving.

Yep. It's like any cover-up. Find the usual suspects, hang everything on them, and especially the dead guy who can't speak up for himself.

From what I understand this was an open secret in the town.

Wasn't there an ice cream cone named for Sandusky. How many of the town's other finest citizens were buying those cones and were aware of what they meant???

The cover-up is in and of itself, almost worse than the original criminality.

Those who know, and could act but would not, are by association in the same rank as the actual perpetrator.

I suppose that Joe Paterno NEEDED the football expertise of Jerry Sandusky, but did he also need this post-humous grief?

In retrospect, it would seem not. The evil things that men do live on after them; The good things are often buried with their bones. (Mark Anthony, Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar")

“The media has downplayed the homosexuality angle of this story, and of other cases such as the Catholic priests”

I tell you what’s fun for me - to go on other sites and talk about the homophobia of the people complaining about Sandusky and the like. Why they should CELEBRATE the diversity in the Penn State coaching staff.

Calling these left-wingers a bunch of homo-phobes is a hoot!!

I have a book titled “Down and Dirty” about Oklahoma football under Switzer. It was written by Charles Thompson a star quarterback on the team.

To make it short, it was probably the most corrupt program i the country. Basically it was totally corrupt. Thompson was also recruited by Oklahoma State and it appears they were just about as bad at the time.

I think the current OSU team under Gundy is probably OK. Maybe the same about Oklahoma now but I don’t know.

Exactly. Blame it on the dead guy.

There are still administrators and powers that be AT Penn State who were part of the cover-up.

Probably the same ones who ordered the statue removed and are applauding its removal.

No doubt Switzer was not a saint, he’ll even admit it (something JoePa was never willing to do).

Are you or Louis Freeh claiming that Joe Paterno did this???
