I am opposed to vacating wins. This is revisionist history. The games have already been played, and the wins are historical facts.

see now this is a case where the new coach “inherited” these problems, not at all similar to Obama who ran foe the office for almost 2 years before election and who “served” in the Senate for a few days before that, But he didn’t know how bad things were until 3 years into his own administration. What a dunce

I could have accepted keeping the wins on Penn State's record, but striking them from Paterno's win total. That would have been a good compromise, give the players the credit for the wins.

a vacation of all wins dating to 1998

It happened. You can't vacate true facts no matter how inconvenient. Of course we live in a society of "reissued" birth certificates with new names, even new genders.

This silliness tells me how unserious the NCAA are in this matter. It's a slap on the wrist. The school keeps its program, not losing even a single season.

In consideration for the local economy, which would be decimated if they took away football.

Four words for you: "TOO BIG TO FAIL."

Paterno’s all-time wins total goes from 409 to 298. ER, Bobby Bowden, Bear Bryant now above Paterno’s total. JoePa goes from 1st in Div I to 7th.

Except it's a LIE. The wins were real. They players who played those games, who made those wins, are now punished.

Paterno is dead. It means nothing to him. This is a coverup. Paterno's record should stand so NO ONE forgets what really happened with him, Sandusky, Pedo State and the rest. Now, they hope to quickly burry this scandal for future generations who look at the top coaches.

This is a crime against history, it's an embarrassment to justice and an affront to the players who worked so hard and the victims of Sandusky the culture of corruption at the university.

Vacating more than a decade of wins PUNISHES all those players who worked all those seasons to put wins in and build that record.

The players there now are in a tough situation but they can, and should, go elsewhere if football is their primary reason for going there. Besides, with all your dear concern for these current players why aren't you unhappy they're punished by not being bowl game eligible?

The right punishment is for the program to be stopped, for current players who will be penalized regardless to move on, for the history not to be rewritten in a sweeping coverup.

A lot of them parlayed that into nice NFL careers. Can't take that away from them.

The wins were real.

They cheated. They covered up Sandusky to gain an advantage...which was their image. They were able to bring in players they wouldn't have otherwise brought in because of that image. Just as with recruiting violations where you are able to bring in players that you otherwise would not have gotten.

Correct. The NCAA is a work around for.the institutions involved, and its very existence is contingent on proving that they can regulate college sports in lieu of the courts and government over-site.

College sports was NEVER going to be a bunch of schools doing whatever they pleased however they pleased.

If The NCAA failed to address this adequately, the whole tangled ball of twisted yarn threatens to unravel, and control would transfer to government bureaucrats, the courts, and hoards of lawyers with dollar-signs in their eyes.

I suspect Emmert saw what was at stake immediately.

Much worse than most receive for similiar circumstances.

I'd be curious to know what you think have been "similar circumstances".

Be interesting to see what the attendance will be at PSU’s football games will be next season.

Money is fungible and universities are not likely to have tight accounting practices.

I am in no way trying to minimize Paterno’s responsibility; only pointing out that a president with high moral standards would have saved the children, school, and even Paterno from the consequences they now face.

Voiding past wins is absurd. Did the NCAA learn how to time travel? Those wins are historical facts and voiding them is punishing innocent players.

It denies Penn State the chance to use Paterno as part of their legacy. Taking it away from the record book takes nothing away from the players, many of which parlayed their Penn State careers into NFL careers.

And how many of those players would have gone to Penn State in the first place, had Sandusky’s actions not been covered up?

I sort of agree with that in a very general sense. But the thing that most bothers me at PSU is the cult-like worship of Paterno, particularly amoung the undergrads. The NCAA vacating the wins strikes at the heart of the Paterno-legend, just as the removal of that statue. Kids gotta learn.

IMHO, the NCAA should have imposed the death penalty anyway. Make Penn State litigate to get it reversed.

The cover up involved multiple levels of leadership. The criminality was so egregious that the NCAA needs to set a precedent and make an example of Penn State.
