They need to do a staff-ectomy in Penn State and just replace ALL of the involved staff.
Anymore and you are punishing the students who enrolled and didn’t know at the time they were enrolling in a viper’s den.

It takes diligence to finish the job. The entire Ped state sports program needs to be re-staffed.

So much valuable radio air time is wasted talking about sports (Hewitt gets pre-empted at least once a week), when we need to have every voice engaged to raise awareness about what we face if our side fails in November. That was my main point.

Don’t punish the innocent. Athletes won’t choose penn state as much right now anyway. But don’t punish the innocent tennis player, runner, gymnast and their families who have struggled to get their kids to college.
Just fire every higher up at the university who could have done something but did not.
When something illegal is going on at a location, everyone Might be rounded up. But those who are found to have known nothing and are truly innocent are let go. It’s bad enough that the athletes are stuck finishing out their college years at Perv State.

It's not even so much the games: it's the damn talk shows ... Hewitt gets pre-empted every Thursday night for PSU football talk. I can't imagine that there will be many listeners tuning in to discuss football minutia (sp?) in the wake of the scandal.
(And yes, I know they always state that regularly scheduled shows are streamed over the web during sportscasts. Lots of good that does when I'm driving, which is usually when I listen to talk radio.)
I guess the real reason that talk radio station management continues the practice of sports pre-emptions is to provide cover in case the Fairness Doctrine is ever re-imposed, which would likely happen if {shudder} 0bama is re-elected.
I know there is a lot of outrage over the cover up, and there should be. I do think we need to be careful so as not to punish the students, et al who had nothing to do with the cover up.
Right. Why punish the new students and the future economy of central Pennsylvania. I want to know why Spanier is still walking the streets and why his wife is still employed there. He needs to be behind bars. The POS is the one who brought an agenda to make Penn State the “most gay friendly”. He was in on the cover up.
I'm by no means a subscriber to notions of "collective salvation" or "collective damnation", but I also believe that when people hitch their wagon to a cause or organiztion they will rise and fall with it. During the course of my life, Paterno evolved from a college football coach, to a winning college football coach, to a legendary college football coach, to a demigod; this did not happen in a vacuum.
Statistics and results on the field made him a winning coach, for which he justly took credit, but it took others at the school, in the community, the sports world etc., to raise him to a legend and beyond. Many of the same people who object to being hurt by his downfall, are the same who elevated him to a position where he had authority and influence well outside the scope of a typical football coach.
Many of those outraged at the treatment Penn State is receiving were perfectly willing to accept the appointment of Spanier as their President, despite the baggage and reputation he brought from Nebraska. They turned a blind eye to Spanier's stated goal of making PSU the most gay friendly campus in the USA. They found no objection in the sponsorship of "C#ntfest" and other like campus activities, and continued to bankroll such absurdities with their tuition, alumni sponsorship and football dollars.
It's sad, but this is real life. If a company CEO embezzles and bankrupts his company, good honorable employees and stockholders feel the effects. When the school made Paterno it's public face and the cornerstone of their reputation, they did so knowing he was only a human being, prone to the faults of the rest of us. Yet, rather than push their academics, and core values, with the football program as a side light, they chose to bank their reputation and prestige on a winning football record.
Matthew 7 cautions us against building on sand. While Paterno may have appeared to be solid as rock, people elevated him to a superhuman status and decided to build there, losing complete sight of the fact that he was just as prone to failure as any of us. IMHO, any organization that builds on anything other than the highest, noblest ideals is prone to failure, and those in the community and the state gambled on what ultimately (and I would argue inevitably) turned out to be an imperfect human with a thin veneer of bronze.
The argument that this is "punishing the innocent," is best addressed from two angles. First, there are no doubt those who were complicit in fostering the environment at Penn State who may not have been directly involved or had no knowledge of Sandusky's crimes. Those who tolerated (or worse, endorsed) Spanier's tenure by paying tuition when they knew what his stated goals were, had a hand in this. Those blindly went to, or supported Penn State exclusively on Paterno's record were, to a degree complicit. Obviously, those in the administration who had knowledge of the allegations were not only complicit, but likely criminally liable. Those students who were cult-like in their response to Paterno's firing and statue removal were complicit in buying into, and reinforcing the greater mystique that contributed to this mess in the first place.
Second, the "punishing the innocent," argument has to be looked at as a simple fact of life. As a Roman Catholic, I belong to a church that has been roundly criticized for similar abuses and coverups...and in many cases, justifiably so. It affect me, and my parish although none of us (to my knowledge) had a direct role in molesting children and covering it up. That's just the way it is, and we have a choice: if we truly believe in the ideals and golas of the institution, as we stand in the rubble we figure out what went wrong and set about to fix it, or we leave.
This is PSU's opportunity to rededicate itself to academics and learning, and instilling and reinforcing responsible character in young adults.
They merely have to commit themselves to doing so.
