ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2012) — A new study raises concern about chronic exposure of workers in industry to a food flavoring ingredient used to produce the distinctive buttery flavor and aroma of microwave popcorn, margarines, snack foods, candy, baked goods, pet foods and other products. It found evidence that the ingredient, diacetyl (DA), intensifies the damaging effects of an abnormal brain protein linked to Alzheimer's disease.

The study appears in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.

This doesn’t surprise me. The odor of microwave popcorn with that artificial butter flavor is about as appetizing as the odor of a port-o-potty.

Yup, my first lager tasted like movie popcorn butter because I pitched the yeast at too high of temperature. Make a note, don’t pitch at 70 degrees like the package recommends. Now I run it through the chiller down to about 50. Much cleaner.

You must’ve been hitting the ol’ diacetyl pretty heavy yourself then. :-)

I refuse to buy any more theater popcorn or drinks, priced outrageously and poor tasting, drinks are watered down, popcorn has a cardboard taste. I brink my own snacks, and I eat my popcorn at home.

While smartfood is good, especially white cheddar, my homemade popcorn blows it out of the universe.

Nothing smells better than popcorn cooking in coconut oil.

Who goes to the movies anymore?

Actually, we went to the drive-in theater last week....first time I’ve been to a *movie* in 20 years! Luckily you can *smuggle* all sorts of food ‘n drinks into a drive-in to save being raped at the register. :)
