WASHINGTON—The Internal Revenue Service may have delivered more than $5 billion in refund checks to identity thieves who filed fraudulent tax returns for 2011, Treasury Department investigators said Thursday. They estimate another $21 billion could make its way to ID thieves' pockets over the next five years. The IRS is detecting far fewer fraudulent tax refund claims than actually occur, according to a government audit that warned the widespread problem could undermine public trust in the U.S. tax system. Although the IRS detected about 940,000 fraudulent returns for last year claiming $6.5 billion in refunds, there were potentially another 1.5 million undetected cases of thieves seeking refunds after assuming the identity of a dead person, child or someone else who normally wouldn't file a tax return.

In one example, investigators found a single address in Lansing, Mich., that was used to file 2,137 separate tax returns. The IRS issued more than $3.3 million in refunds to that address. Three addresses in Florida, the epicenter of the identity theft crisis, filed more than 500 returns totaling more than $1 million in refunds for each address.

In another troubling scenario, hundreds of refunds were deposited into the same bank account—a red flag for investigators searching for ID thieves who may be filing for refunds for multiple people. As a victim, myself, of identity theft at the IRS (someone else filing a return using my social security number), I am thoroughly familiar with the headaches it can cause. You wouldn't believe the paperwork, phone calls, police reports, letters to Congressmen . . . and I still don't have my refund for this year! And this is the 2nd year in a row. Last year, I received my refund in November! And I am an ordinary citizen, a schoolteacher with modest income. Needless to say, I have recently stopped withholding much at all from my pay. I'll just keep it. But, the big story here is that identity theft at the IRS (stolen Social security numbers to file returns) is up 10-fold in the 3 years of the Obama administration. At first, I blamed illegal aliens. But, I don't think that, anymore. It is, by all appearances, organized crime. Nearly 1 million people this past year! How in the Hell can the IRS mail 2,137refunds to the same address?!?!? Michigan? Florida? Not mentioned in this article is that a similar block of mailing refunds went to an address in Chicago . . . and we all know who comes from there!

I am so sorry the IRS has abused you. It is even laughable that we would entertain paying these government goons more money, giving them more damn resources, etc. How darn difficult is it to check SSN’s by state and dates issues? Add the simplest thing of all-”Did this person file last year?” Even in the last five? What was/were the age(s) on the form, the address, how much does the gross and AGI differ from the last return? I suspect our AFGE employeees are about equally ignorant everywhere. The state of Hawaii SSN’s must be loaded with fakes from Communist China, Singapore, Indonesia and all of Obama’s pals.

I saw it mentioned in a “comment” on one of the news “blogs”, that most of this fraud is on the basis of earned income tax credit. This puts it right in line with social justice goals, and the nonenforcement of immigration law. Hate to say it, but I’m starting to believe.

They stole my Dad’s SS number right after he passed. Now IRS trying to bill my step mom who is in alzheimer’s care for close to $3K for that year and who knows what they will bill for the next year after that. Calling IRS is interesting. The people who help you are FULLY AWARE of this problem! How can they send out checks when they know there is fraud!!!! Still don’t know if this is cleared from her tax obligations. Not enough to have to deal with loss of my Dad and having to deal with courts and conservatorship, but now this as well.

ICE's "documents and benefits fraud task force" found a common practice among "impoverished" illegals is to buy several faked identities for several thousand dollars each----the illegal then votes and rides the US gravy train under several names.

In 2005, the pay outs totaled $924 million. This program allows low income earners to claim a $1,000 per child credit. $20 billion EITC is estimated to have been paid out to these cunning "impoverished" illegals. Most of them are collecting over and over again-----using multiple identities-----falsifying official apps---claiming children they do not have and/or falsely stating kids are back in their homelands.

REFERENCE March 8, 2012 KENNER, La. -- Kenner police arrested illegal Marvin Baca who sold false W-2 forms to another illegal immigrant for $1,500. Baca sold fraudulent W-2 forms for $1,500 to other Hispanics here illegally.

Police said that on one of the forged W-2 forms had a SS no of a person living in Virginia. Police said illegal Hispanics purchase fictitious W-2 forms and file false tax returns with the government to receive EITC refunds. Baca was charged with one count of ID theft and two counts of forgery.

Another example is at least $900 Billion annually in easily identified medicare / medicaid fraud. A few years back in NJ, a hospital routinely double bill medicaid patients. It was built into the programming. IBM's offer to fix for free has been rejected.
