Hurricane Isaac

Posted on 08/26/2012 8:12:04 AM PDT by wolfman23601

NHC has been slow to adjust their forecast, but models in the last 24week hours have been indicating a possible Cat 3 hitting New Orleans. While dems have been rooting for the Tampa landfall to ruin our convention, a NO landfall catastrophe with Jindal running circles around 0, while 0 is playing politics during the aftermath... maybe it is their convention that gets ruined. I am certainly not rooting for a disaster, but it would certainly be ironic.

Looks like, if it doesn’t do something radical, Florida just dodged another bullet.

Wasn’t that bad? Everything south of I-10 in MS was completely destroyed. My parents, 100+ miles inland from the coast were without potable water, power, phone or cell for six WEEKS post Katrina. Katrina didn’t just strike the levees in NO. NO got a glancing blow. Grand Isle and the MS gulf coast got the landfalling cane.

Katrina moved through quickly and was in and out in 12 hours . If this thing comes in at 110 mph and hangs around for 48 hours dumping 20 inches of rain and pushing water into the city , it will be worse.

Just to add. If it verifies anywhere near any of the current model paths in the GOM gas prices WILL be near $5/gal next week or week after.

Right, 125 mph winds aren't what produced the majority of the damage. Everyone knows that. Sure, a Cat 3 storm is an awful thing otherwise, but in this case, talking about New Orleans, as the post I replied to was, the major damage came from levee failure.

And yes, I understand about the rest of the area, and what happened there. Don't get me wrong, I've been there, listening for hours, as a CAT 5 roared over my house revealing an alien planet the next morning....

Currently, they are predicting 105 mph winds at land fall, not as bad as Katrina, as the original post said it would be.

Dems may WISH they only had a huricane descending upon THEIR convention in Charlotte next week.

A combination of scheduled events during their convention has the earmarks of a “Perfect Storm” -

Stock up on popcorn. could be quite a show.

http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/12/charlotte-prepping-for-ows-at-dnc.html

and then the side shows like the Planned Parenthood ‘celebration’: “Sex, Politics & Cocktails” (somethings you just can’t make up)

and will the Code Pink lovelies be there dressed in their pink vaginas? Let’s hope so - ahahah

I think all of our vehicles are near full, should give us about 1400 miles worth of driving. With daughter off at college, we have her vehicle here, son’s high school is a mere one mile away and DH can work from home when he wants too.

I say let the prices go sky high between now and Nov. 6th.

it will be worse.

Not if the levees hold.

How did Mike Siedel of the Weather Channel legally travel to Cuba to cover this event. Isn’t there a federal ban on citizens traveling to that Communist state?

My understanding is that the 'land of the free' doesn't allow direct flights to the island, so people have to fly to Canada, then to Cuba. That'll show'em!

Well, what we all want to know is, since Katrina was Bush’s fault, if this storm causes big damage in New Orleans, will that be Obama’s fault????

"That wasn't that bad, its the levee failure that caused the disaster"

Paradox, the Mississippi Gulf Coast was destroyed from Waveland to Pascagoula almost 20 miles inland. Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was severely affected as were other cities in Mississippi. The New Orleans debacle was from levee failure. The hurricane's wrath was in Mississippi. Unfortunately, Mississippians are not of the Democrat persuasion and the majority of the MSM coverage was around New Orleans. Buildings that survived Camille were destroyed by Katrina and the storm surge was much further inland than Camille.

Exactly my question. Probably flew to another country, then to Cuba. That's the "how." But I sure would like to know the HOW...

Worse than Katrina? How do you figure? Katrina hit at 125 mph, and that wasn’t that bad, its the levee failure that caused the disaster. Those have been rebuilt to a much higher standard.

Right, Paradox! It is sad how history was rewritten so quickly after Katrina. Everyone thinks Katrina hit New Orleans, but that is not the case. Katrina wiped out the Mississippi Gulf Coast, because that's where the storm actually hit, NOT New Orleans. New Orleans had some high winds, but it was levee failure that caused the disastrous flooding, not a direct hit by Katrina.

We can use the water.

“Shootout” this weekend at Lake of the Ozarks.
Lots of big, noisy high powered boats.

Until Isaac is totally off the North American continent we are going to be treated to MSM headlines—always during an important event at the GOP Convention—such as:

“ISAAC BLOWS SQUIRREL OUT OF PINE TREE IN ATLANTA”

—First responders alerted.

Buildings that survived Camille were destroyed by Katrina and the storm surge was much further inland than Camille.

Camille, IIRC, was a very tightly wound storm that did not cover as large an area as Katrina. That made Camille's winds the primary damage mechanism. Katrina had the double hit of winds as well as pushing a huge storm surge ahead of it. A lot of structures that survive winds will be taken out by being pounded with water, which has the inertia to really deliver a damaging blow to buildings and land.

Similar deal with Andrew down in FL. Andrew was a relatively small but ferocious hurricane that delivered tremendous damage but over a relatively narrow swath. People in northern FL didn't see many effects, but south FL got clobbered.

Hopefully it isn’t too strong. The rain coming right up the Mississippii looks awesome!
