I betcha 90% of our under-30 population would race to the polls to vote “yea” on this idea.

I was told to take a vacation day for open-heart surgery.

I find this very suspicious. I live in the UK and I know plenty of people who do not get 29 days vacation, so I cannot think it is accurate. Such a number must count public holidays (Christmas, Easter etc) as compulsory, and there are plenty of occupations where people do have to work on public holidays.
I think that what is happening here is an invalid comparison. There are plenty of public holidays in the US (at least as many as there are in the UK in fact) but there is probably no law that says that you have to have them. But of course most people do.

I’d say over half the countries on that list are easily able to defend themselves, and slightly under half have no input from the US military at all.

Do they require that you get the days or do they require that you take them?

I prefer the freedom to take, or save, or ignore vacation time (though I usually save, then take). If they required it, I'd be as grumpy about that as I am about any other (in my view) non-work-related job requirement (recently had a mandatory class on a software package I've been using for two years--GRUMP!).
