Family says the breed of dog is to blame, not the owner.
A White Rock family is calling for a ban on pit bulls after their four-year-old daughter was attacked by a friend's dog while playing at a backyard barbeque.
Emma-Leigh Cranford had being playing with the pit bull just days before the attack. But her parents Elizabeth and Mike Cranford say the dog pinned her against a fence and bit her face savagely at a barbecue last week.
"All I heard was a growl and she was pinned between the bench and the fence and he was just on top of her and it happened so quick," Elizabeth told CBC News.
"When I had her in my arms I didn't know if she was dying."
...
A recent report in Toronto showed the number of dog bites fell since a pit bull ban was put in place seven years ago, but the Ontario ban is under attack by opponents.

I have been told, repeatedly, that attacks like this are rare.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm never nervous when watching an unsupervised 4-year-old play with dogs, of any breed.
Full-size horses are better, but that's simply my opinion. /s

But without four year olds, how will we ever have five, six, or seven year olds?

Ah, old Chet99. Right up your alley, dog and ban and everything.
I’ll ping ya but it is like talking to a grave, I know... I’ll also have a drink at that grave but, unlike on TV, I’ll drink both glasses...

I see they have idiots in Canada too.
I don’t remember, as a young parent, leaving my daughter unattended around anyone’s dog. Except the one time that a friend’s dog snapped at her when I went to the other side of the truck for just a few seconds. Broke one of her front teeth. Dog’s fault? No, he was just a contractor’s dog protecting HIS truck. My fault? You bet! Should all Labs been banned? Get a life.
Children are their parent’s responsibility and no one else.

I don’t generally have a problem with pitbulls, I think most of their owners should be banned though.

shoot the damned dog, then shoot the effing owners of the dog. pit bulls are cow dogs, if you don’t have cattle, then get a poodle

Let’s see, a bbq, a hungry dog, and an unsupervised four year old. What could possibly go wrong. Anyone want to bet the unsupervised four year old did something to the dog like pulled his tail or played keep away with a piece of bbq?

I'm really tired of hearing "Oh, Pitts are no different from other dogs. If raised right, they're not aggressive at all". Bull. They're number one on the ASPCA's list of breeds with high aggression tendencies: they were bread specifically for aggressiveness. Even if you lovingly raise that pup, that aggressive instinct... far more so than other dogs... is always going to be in the DNA, and small helpless kids are very prone to setting off the "prey" instinct in them. If you had a Pitt and it didn't maul your kid, it doesn't mean the breeding experts were wrong, it means you were
lucky. It's like playing with a rattlesnake without getting bitten and going "I don't see what the big deal is?". The facts are indisputable. The CDC lists the Pit Bull as... overwhelmingly... the
number one breed in attacks on humans, with almost twice as many incidents as the number two breed on the list.
They're
fantastic guard dogs, and great companions for adults with strong personalities. But kids? You're taking your little children's health in your hands if you've got a Pit.
