I’m getting 2.26Mbps in Mx, but 53.3 in Balt.

I should have said they are all wireless.

If you can bypass the wireless (direct connect instead) and see if that makes a difference. If it does, then perhaps try configuring your wireless to use a different channel (perhaps some neighbor turned theirs on using the same channel as you).

Here is a very important thing you should know regarding DSL.

If your provider has you putting filters on the phone jacks, you’re not getting optimum performance.

The best DSL requires that the line be split at the phone box outside on your house. That way you have a dedicated DSL jack that doesn’t conflict with the phone lines. The provider knows that, but most are too lazy and just don’t care.

As far as testing speed, a lot of providers have a speed test directly to their server, so you can test the route from the provider to you, which is the best indicator of the quality of your connection. Run the test at off peak hours to get a more honest reading.

Someone else said bypass the router and run the network wire directly from the modem to the PC. That’s a good suggestion.

Ask your provider how far you are from the switching station. IIRC DSL maxes out at about 18K feet. That wouldn’t be your problem here, but it will give you an idea of the max throughput you could get provisioned for.

Run full checks for adware, spyware and viruses. You get a trojan and it will use your bandwidth.

I also have found a real time network (bandwidth) meter to be a useful tool. If you are using Win 7, you can get a free one at http://addgadgets.com/

Read the posts through 19.

The beest first test is the direction connection from computer to DSL modem.

Sounds like you are going to be calling the phone company. When you are on the support call, have them clear the modem from they server's registration. (First, you have to turn yours off.) They may not know what you are talking about. If that is the case, ask to move up to Tier Level 2 support in the US. They will probably fight that issue but insist. The Tier 2 tech should know what to do. If he doesn't, insist he get help from his supervisor.

They should also be checking the integrity of your line. Tier Level 1 should be able to clean your line if there are problems. Again, if they don't know what you are asking for, ask for Tier 2.

If they can't clear up the line, ask for them to physically change which line your DSL line ports through from CO to your the box at the street. They will fight this issue beyond hell freezing over. Just insist that you are not getting the service you are paying for. Do note, that you may be thinking you are paying for 2.5 mbs but that isn't what you are necessarily contracting are for. That may be the maximum they will provide and not the minimum that they must provide.

Have fun!

They are two separate boxes.

I tried http://reviews.cnet.com/internet-speed-test/

Getting slow as heck readings directly through the modem.

My previous post assumes you don’t have a malware issue (given multiple devices having an issue).

Thanks. I think it’s the phone line. ATT has actually been pretty helpful in the past. I’m the last house on the exchange on my street. They used to have to change the (slicks????) interface about once every six months when I had dial up.

The DSL helped. This is the first time I’ve had this here. My modem did die on me about three months ago.

I have the laptop in the modem now and am getting very low speeds.

Unplug the DSL modem and, if it’s a modular plug, also unplug it from the telco side. Wait at least 1 full minute and plug it all back in again. Direct-connect the PC to the DSL modem and try the speed test again.

If it’s still slow, swap the ethernet cable for a different one (the one between the PC and the DSL modem) and test again. This is just to be sure you don’t have a bad cable (extremely rare).

If still slow, try the direct-connect from a different PC and test again. This will either eliminate the PC as the cause, or confirm that you have a PC problem.

If still slow at this point, then you need to call your DSL provider. They should be able to help diagnose remotely, including line checks, clearing the line, etc.

Hmmm, new month, new quarter, I wonder what your telco's maintenance schedule is?

The DSL lines are low voltage. The modem ports are designed for low voltage throughput.

If your modem is going out a lot there is probably to much voltage creeping into the system. Hopefully, you have your modem hooked up to a good surge protector. ($30+ and it should have at least 3000 jueles. Those surge protectors will usually have a phone line in and out to filter for bad power. I never use them, though. Or get a name brand UPS with VR (voltage regulation) on it...APC, Belkin, Fellows.)

Expect to be buying a new router at some point.

Something else you can check is for a bad DSL filter. They don't go out very often, though.

Do they have UVerse in your area? I have heard decent things about it but haven't had to deal with it yet.

You can only get 2.5Mbps total. If you have several computer using it, the 2.5 will be divided among however many puters that are concurrently logged on. If one is playing an internet movie, watch out. Also, DSL speed will drop when more users are logged on. Your ISP probably specifies a range of speeds for your monthly rate. You will probably be at the lower speed between 5 and 11 PM.

Getting slow as heck readings directly through the modem.

Sounds like you've found the issue, then. (We'll, at least you know it's somewhere from the modem on back to the phone company).

I, unfortunately, found that I've got an issue inside the walls in my manufactured home. Probably chewed on by mice. Right now, I have a phone cable running from the phone company box outside my back door, across my kitchen floor, into my DSL modem. It's an eye-sore and a tripping hazard but my Internet service doesn't drop out every 5 minutes. I'll eventually have to run a new cable through the walls.

Yes, what you need to do is put the router inside your sling shot. Then shoot it across your backyard and time how long it takes to fly across the the length of it and it’s aerodynamics thereof. Thank you.

Connect directly to your ADSL modem and pull up the modems menu. Usually the menu can be accessed by typing 192.168.1.254 in your browser, then enter. If you have 3meg service, your sync rate should be 3.5meg. If your sync rate at the modem is correct, chances are high it’s a PC problem.

If the sync rate is less than the speed you are paying for, there is either a line problem (can be inside or outside), or the line is not capable of delivering the bandwidth you are paying for. Also look at the statistics tab in the menu to see if you are taking FEC or CRC errors. There should be few if any.

Need help trying to determine if my DSL line is the problem or the router. The modem is only 3 months old. I have it set to the maximum output.

I'm concerned as to what you mean by "set to the maximum output"

If you talking the Ethernet port speed that has nothing to do with the dsl speed

And a Ethernet port speed and duplex mismatched between you router and modem will case nothing but problems...

Leave it at the defaults which most likely would be auto negotiate...

So to test your dsl speed...eliminate the router... connect the Ethernet of you dsl modem to the Ethernet port of your pc

Got to a command prompt and run ipconfig/all

Look for the IP of your DNS server and ping the ip address repeatedly to see if you get consistent response times

If that seems consistent...you can pick a speed test site...I like http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

But here the deal with "guaranteed speed" that is from you dsl modem to your ISP...not from you IPS to the Internet...

Your only as fast as the slowest link...

Many ISP cheap out on the the connect they have to internet...

So big woop.. you get 2.5 MEG to your ISP ...but too the Internet your stuck in a traffic jam, sharing an oversubscribed backbone link to the Internet with all the others users

IPS are the same as telco...you shared the bandwidth... not everyone can use at once and get whats "guaranteed" speed

I get 1.8Mbps dn 0.7 up on my DSL.

I’m well over a mile from the nearest switch...miracle I get on at all out here in the middle of nowhere.
