After looking at the wreckage at the crash site & the planes on his website, it looks more like he went down in his P-51.

Wonder if there’s any family relation? RIP pilot man.

I’m not so sure.

If you look at the main gear, it is hinged very near the leading edge, and appears to retract aft. I believe it may be the Corsair. The rest of it appears to smashed up to tell. Sad, those 4360 powered Corsairs almost seem cursed.

Just shook his hand at Oshkosh, I can’t remember an Oshkosh I went to he wasn’t there, and my first was 1975.

Same thing happened just last week, not three miles from my house.

His name was Glenn Smith, and he was from Texas.

I knew Bob from a previous life and he was truly one of the best. He could not only fly any antique plane, he could build them as well. He was a big supporter of the air museum at West Fargo and, as I recall, helped rebuild some of the planes exhinited there.

After looking at the pics in the article, looks like it was the blue Super Corsair that crashed. A twin to the pic you posted only blue.

It was NX5577N in which he went down... The blue one... He retored both the red NX5588N and the blue one one. Sad...
