Woman Finds Renoir Original at Flea Market

(Newser) – The flea market box lot was less than $50, and the buyer picked it up mostly for the Paul Bunyan doll it contained. But it turns out the box lot also contained an original painting by Renoir that could fetch up to $100,000 in an auction at the end of the month, reports the New York Times. The 5.5-inch-by-9-inch painting of the Seine riverside is believed to be Renoir's Paysage Bords de Seine. It was bought from a French gallery in 1925 and later sold to a Maryland collector, but art historians aren't sure when or how it disappeared.

I’m jealous. Kiddo, without permission, used mine to scoop goat feed and the goat broke it. Kiddo bought me a new one but it doesn’t show the 1/4th cup mark which ticks me off every time I use it.

Meh. My girlfriend-of-the-moment thought I could have got him down to $0.50 each.

"I plan on reconditioning the Fender."

Put new strings on that Fender and STOP right there. The less "reconditioning" you do, and the more scrapes, dings, gouges, scratches and paint-worn wood showing, the more it'll be worth as a vintage collectible.

I know a guy who found a relic vintage pre-CBS Strat (actually a '54!) and he was going to "recondition" it (paint the body, nitro-cellulose the neck, etc.) I convinced him not to.

The guitar sold at Sotheby's for $82K. Had he re-finished it, he might have gotten $20K, probably less.

My dad [rest his soul] had a knack for *finds* at yard sales...possibly b/c he was so patient. He’d buy a baggie of old broken costume jewelry and find scraps of discarded gold jewelry in it.

I probably hate you. And if I don't, it's not because you haven't earned it.

“Art consists of limitation. The most beautiful part of every picture is the frame.” G. K. Chesterton quote

By far the most beautiful things in any museum are the works of God walking around.
