Woman Finds Renoir Original at Flea Market
Newsre.com ^ | September 8, 2012 | Mark Russell

(Newser) – The flea market box lot was less than $50, and the buyer picked it up mostly for the Paul Bunyan doll it contained. But it turns out the box lot also contained an original painting by Renoir that could fetch up to $100,000 in an auction at the end of the month, reports the New York Times. The 5.5-inch-by-9-inch painting of the Seine riverside is believed to be Renoir's Paysage Bords de Seine. It was bought from a French gallery in 1925 and later sold to a Maryland collector, but art historians aren't sure when or how it disappeared.

Definitely an improvement, especially considering where the original hangs.

But, remember, it’s a total basket case. No electronics at all.

Reminds me of that old Rush Limbaugh Spatula City 60-second sale spot, “Warm nickel-plated plutonium pits! Only $2 each, three for $5!”

My best yard sale find cost me 50 cents. It's a Good Housekeeping cook book published during World War II.

It has all the wonderful-tasting recipes used by our moms and grandmas.....like meat loaf and pot roast and cucumbers in sour cream and all those time-consuming, old-fashioned recipes that actually taste (gasp!) delicious.

Of interest in the cook book, however, is a chapter called "Wartime Supplement". This section contains recipes that employ substitutes for butter and sugar. Our moms and grannys had to have coupons from ration books to buy these scarce staples. So it's fun to read the recipes for sugarless this and butterless that.

The cook book is on my shelf right next to another prized possession, the Freeper "Clinton Legacy Cookbook", chock full of recipes sent to freeper chef, "Carlo" who put it together and had it published.

I still have a couple of dad's gasoline ration books with glued-in stamps in my memorabilia drawer. Hard to imagine they're almost 70 years old now.

The collectors' market pays about 5 bucks each for war ration books. My 50-cent vintage wartime cook book is priceless.

Can you see the dog or sheep’s head in the upper right hand corner facing to the right?
Do you see the shepherd at the bottom just left of center?
Do you see the ugly open-mouthed woman at lower left wearing an earring covered by blond/blue hair and staring to the left?
How about the rib cage at the upper left?
Got to be a story there somewhere. (Just funning)

My son in law told me if I ever find anything from Gibson to buy it....I found a 1923 Gibson Mandolin in great shape no cracks or chips in the wood, It had the Gibson label inside with the date, style etc. He wanted 100 dollars but I got him down to 80.....Checked it out on Internet at Elders and they had one just it listed as sold for about 4000 dollars...It came with the original case. The label was inside, paper that had yellowed over the years and I don't remember all the numbers, except the date and I think the style was A.
I give my adult children a hundred dollars for their birthday so when I was offered 300 by my sisters boyfriend, I decided to give it to my SIL. His daughter has it and is self taught on the mandolin and plays great...

They bought her a new case for it but I warned them not to get rid of the old original case....best thing I ever got at a garage sale...

Sounds like a wonderful find.

I must admit, my one regret, when I was *down-sizing*, I was too hasty in putting out my huge cookbook collection. Wish I had been more careful and pulled out my favorite classics.

It’s one of the incentives for me to rummage sale, in hopes I can someday replace a few of them. :)

I love how our forewomen could *make do* with ingredients and still produce delicious meals.

My main “AX” is a Gibson Les Paul. It is a magnificent Instrument.

Gibson Mandolins are rare and beautiful! You did well! :-)

I saw Georges Seurat's "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" at The Art Institute of Chicago in July. Absolutely stunning! And HUGE... much bigger than I expected.
