Chicago Mayor Emanuel Does Not Like Nickelback, Spokesperson Says (Teachers Union Poster)

A sign seen during a protest by the Chicago Teachers Union.

The strike going on in Chicago is serious: 350,000 students are locked out and we brought you the news in a post from this morning.

We'll get back to real news in a little. First, here's a bit of levity:

There is a picture from the picket lines on Monday that had Daniel Strauss, who tweeted it, saying, "Civility has disappeared in Chicago Teachers Union protests."

The sign was written in all caps: "RAHM EMANUEL LIKES NICKELBACK."

Nickelback, if you're not of that persuasion, is a popular Canadian rock band, which is not entirely unfamiliar with this kind of controversy. Back in 2011, Detroit Lions fans actually started a petition to have the band removed from a half-time show.

But, alas, this protest sign — and pop culture slur — would be rated "false" if checked out by Politifact. The mayor's spokesperson responded with one word when the Chicago Redeye asked if Emanuel liked Nickelback: "No."

Nickelback is so non-spectacular that most people can’t name one band member or any of their songs.

Nickleback is not my preference. That's the only song of theirs that I know.

This is my preference

How You Remind Me Of Someday

I understand formula rock. But at least try to vary the formula.

My musical tastes are pretty wide ranging.

As is mine. One year I saw Hank Williams Jr. at Irvine Meadows Amphitheater. One month later I saw Metallica at the same venue. I thoroughly enjoyed both.

I stood outside of 3 First National Plaza today while these parasites marched by. I had a few things of my own to shout.

“When the Taleban uses children as hostages we call them terrorists. What does that make you?”

That turned a few heads.

After that came: “If one single CPS student in Englewood catches a bullet today that blood is in your hands!”

Their little drummer boy slowed down at that point.

“Pick it up drum monkey! Maybe if you beat that thing loud enough you can drown out your conscience!”.

By the time I was done there we half a dozen people shouting similar stuff. And the union goon who was filming it all looked like she’d been hit with a shovel.

I loved your post!! We should get together all downtown freepers for a lunchtime counter protest.

What you were yelling back at the idiot protestors was positively brilliant IMO. I'm at Clark and Jackson in the old Continental bank building, just down the street from you.
