Korean rapper Psy was a last minute addition to the “Today” show Toyota Concert Series schedule, but on September 14 he packed and the Plaza and rocked the crowd with “Gangnam Style.” Fans started lining up to see Psy on Thursday and he didn’t disappoint.

In an opening clip, “Today” told Psy’s story of how the quirky, colorful and outrageously catchy “Gangnam Style” has swept across the US and made its creator an overnight sensation. From flash mobs in Australia to Dodger stadium, the dance craze is everywhere.

Although he’s new to the United States, Psy has been on the pop charts in Korea for more than a decade. However, he was never viewed as the artist to become an international crossover sensation. That’s just what he is. Psy performed on the MTV VMAs and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” Plus, “Gangnam Style” was featured on CNN International and “Nightline” in just a few short weeks.

This Gangnam style (from the Philippine TV station we occasionally watch), is the 1960’s “Pony” dance step.

On Internet, I ran across 3 stages of Gangnam Style addiction:

1) WTF?

2) Hmm, it's not bad and the song is catchy.

3) Help! I am so addicted that it has stuck in my mind, playing itself again and again.

There are many out there who do not like songs by the likes of Justin Bieber. They all rallied around Gangnam Style.

Korean music finally gets noticed by our press, and its this one? lol. Okay, I think Wonder Girls or Girls Generation have appeared on American TV (Live with Kelly and David Letterman Show)

I still prefer T-Ara, 4 Minute, 2NE1 etc.

Some others say the “horse dance” is from 80’s. I suppose its variation is coming out over the years. The choreographer who was in charge of creating this dance told SK media that he worked on old 80’s dance moves and gave some style changes. More suitable for a single performer comic dance with extra catchy appearance.

I have seen that Rock and Heavy Metal fans are displeased at Gangnam Style. In S. Korea, Rock fans are not only displeased but downright hostile. They are not usually into K-pop, Psy or otherwise, but somehow react strongly(in a negative way) toward Oppan Gangnam Style, while they tend to be casually dismissive of other K-pops.

Hopefully it doesn’t become as annoying as the Numa Numa song.

Okay, probably not possible.

Kinda reminds me of Morris Day and The Time singing, “Jungle Love.”

The old "Mods vs. Rockers" thing all over again, it seems.

Have you seen or heard Vanilla Lucy (with Bae da Hae as the lead singer)? I love their style which features a quartet with a cello, a violin, an E flat clarinet and a classically trained singer. Their compositions are rather eclectic and certainly not quite K-Pop style. I’ve not seen much about them lately since da Hae went solo.

I’ve also discovered two guys who called themselves “10cm” (one is 10 cm taller than the other). One plays guitar and the other sings. He has a great voice.

I’ve fallen in love with Kolleen Park whom I think you’ve surely heard of. She is a US citizen by birth, has a wonderful and powerful voice and IMO, is stunningly beautiful.

What I find interesting about “Psy” is that he too, like Kolleen Park, studied music in the US. She in California and he at Boston University and the Berklee School of Music.

There are so many different styles of music that a lot of people never heard of, hopefully people can be exposed to it.

I am not sure I have seen them, but I will look for them. I might have glimpsed them if they were shown on MNET before FiOS dropped it.
